Its exact value has been the subject of debate, but the Hubble Constant is an important figure in modern astronomy. Featuring Mike Merrifield from the University of Nottingham. The Hubble constant tells us how quickly the universe is expanding and is usually quoted in really odd units. It also isn't actually a constant, and took many years to work out a reliable value for, and involved many arguments. Some groups thought it was around 100, others thought it was nearer to 50, and today we think it is about 67. So everyone wins! Also discussing dark energy and gravity. New observations seem to settle the question of where cosmic rays come from. Dr Tony Padilla discusses the research. See the paper at: http://arxiv.org/pdf/1302.3307v1.pdf COMMENT FROM TONY: "My comments at 1.30 were a bit hasty. Cosmic rays do not pass through the earth. Most collide in the upper atmosphere. I was actually thinking of the LHC safety debate. If they exist, mini blackholes produced by cosmic ray collisions on earth would slip straight through because the earth isn't dense enough. But not the protons themselves." But let's try anyway. If that insane length was one dollar bill / Then to reach the wavelength of the smallest particles Quarks, that are so fundamental they don't have an inherent size would be the current price you'd gain if you sold Mount Everest made out of gold. That is insane. if you applied the Midas touch to my mind it'd be quite enough to buy a car to drive And the gluons and 3 quarks combined make a large hadron those guys collide; a proton / and to magnify to that size would turn that Midas mountain into a diamond / my mind made of that could buy you an island / and next we ramp up, from quarks and protons

In anticipation of questions and comments, I thought I'd write this in the description (where no-one will ever see it!!!) Prof Moriarty and I have discussed the issue of "atoms touching" many times off camera. We've shared different views on the best definitions and tools used by various online "explainers" over the years. Clearly it is an issue close to Professor Moriarty's heart because it involves his main area of research. And I am mindful he is a professional on the topic. I am not. We jointly decided to make a Sixty Symbols video that reflected our previous discussions, so included more than my usual fill of provocative questions. And regardless, I see it as my role to be a "devil's advocate" and ensure we challenge our scientists and get the best possible explanations. I can assure everyone it was done in good spirit and we had a laugh afterwards. Oh and by the way, Prof Moriarty is now on Twitter... https://twitter.com/Moriarty2112

For those wishing to convert the values back to normal metric values in order to bake the cake, know that it should be 126 giga-yotta eV/c2 of both sugar & flour and only 0.02 Hubble Barns of butter. Otherwise you’ll end up with a cake that is ~74% butter and Mary Berry won’t enjoy that soggy bottom.
