The morning of Cathy's husband's funeral arrives, and her family gathers at the house to wait for the cars. Battling her brother's partner and meeting her son's new and over-enthusiastic girlfriend Kelly, Cathy prepares herself for a day of great emotion, with a little help from her friend Michael. Yet amid the grief, she is determined to find out who she is again, and possibly find love a second time around.
The first Valentine's Day since the death of Cathy's husband arrives, so her brother Derek comes round to show moral support and keep her company. However, his partner Pauline wishes that she was anywhere other than in attendance. Son Jason breaks some surprising news, and when Michael turns up unannounced, he's concerned to find that Cathy has received a Valentine's card.
Cathy's friends and relatives rally round to help her clear the garage of its clutter. Her brother and his partner are fresh from playing a round of golf - and making friends with a millionaire into the bargain. During the day, Cathy sees a new side to Kelly, whose mother appears to take custody of an old fridge. Michael is assisting too - and also faces a decision.
The year has almost turned full circle since the death of her other half, and as Cathy finalises preparations for a New Year's Eve party, Kelly and Jason arrive back arguing. Michael turns up, and as Cathy attempts to sort out Jason and keep festivities moving, she also tries to find the right moment to give him his Christmas present.
