However, the new fish and Mr. Mole's grandson become a little mischievous and don't share Franklin and Goldie's interests to play.; After learning that Skunk is receiving a lot of attention due to her broken arm, Franklin lets Bear put a papier-mâché cast on his arm, so he can get the same, but it proves to be a hindrance.
Seeing his friend's Mother's Day gifts that have a use makes Franklin think his isn't special enough, until his mother sees it for herself.; Franklin feels he has grown up overnight. Bear makes him have second thoughts about growing up, but Franklin's parents tell him it doesn't happen that quickly.

Once he tells his parents what really happened, he learns what true responsibility is.

When Granny tells him that the whistle belonged to his grandfather, they go on a wild goose chase to get it back.; Franklin and his class were entertained by Ms. Panda and her piano. This inspired Franklin and Beaver to take up piano lessons from Franklin's Granny in order to impress Ms. Panda. However, while Beaver has the patience, Franklin's enthusiasm for his piano lessons begins to wane. He didn't realize how practice can really be perfect until he noticed how well Beaver was playing the piano while he was out goofing off.
Franklin is initially disappointed when his parents take him on a trip to a pioneer village instead of to an amusement park. As it happens, he enjoys all the different chores, while his parents are exhausted, but are content that Franklin likes it after all.; Franklin cannot wait to show off his flashy new bicycle helmet. When problems arise, Franklin hides his bike and helmet thinking he'll be laughed at, but he is told that he needs to wear it if he wants to pass the safety course.
Franklin is excited because his birthday is approaching closer and he wants to have a party so all his friends can celebrate the big day with him; on the other hand, he thinks it won't be much fun to hold his birthday party at home, but his parents help make the party extra special. However, Franklin gets carried away with his party plans and offers to let Goose, Beaver, Badger, Rabbit, Snail, and all the rest join Franklin's parents in creating a spectacular celebration that Franklin will never forget.; All of Franklin's friends love the nickname that Franklin thought up for Bear, except for Bear himself. A trip to Mr. Mole's garden gives Franklin a new outlook about sharing the world with other living creatures.; Franklin and Snail decide to run away after having a bad day (which started with being reprimanded by Mr. Owl at school for talking during reading time, getting chastised by Fox & Beaver for supposedly not playing fair at sports, Bear getting angry at him for having his library book that's almost overdue, and his Mom getting upset at them for making a mess after they decide to make their own snack because she was too busy painting the shed to make them one), but have trouble figuring out how to go about it.
On a rainy day, Franklin is bored. Whatever stifles his boredom is short lived, until his parents teach him how to play by himself.; Franklin fails to understand hours and minutes, making him lack punctuality. Mr. Owl helps Franklin understand time better.
Franklin readies himself for the school spelling test, but he cheats on the last word. Full of guilt, Franklin confesses to Mr. Owl.; Franklin takes a lone duckling home, who proves to be quite a handful. Franklin finally brings the duckling back to its family.

After a fun-filled summer, Franklin and his friends go back to school. They find that Mr. Owl is out on family business and their substitute is Ms. Koala. Ms. Koala seems very strange to them and Franklin doesn't like her at first when she makes him change seats after goofing off. The class soon learns more about her and comes to accept her "can-do" attitude and ideas of trying new things. Meanwhile, Harriet's best friend Beatrice is going to preschool, but she's still too young to attend. She makes a new friend in Beaver's new little brother, Kit, but not before an unfortunate accident.
Franklin shares many good times with his Granny, but when she takes ill, he's determined to help her. He hears the story from his Aunt Lucy of a talisman that may help to cure the illness. The talisman is found in Turtle Lake, however, it's a difficult journey to get there. He'll need to get help from his friends and Aunt, but must also contend with her headstrong goddaughter Samantha.
