Season 1

  • S01E01 Episode One

    • September 12, 2006

We meet Wayne Anderson at the beginning of this episode, where he introduces himself as "Wayne Anderson, 43 years old, and been trying to make it in the music industry for 30 years". He's a big fan of the "evergreens" such as Tom Jones, and he laments about how he hasn't made it big in the music industry yet, telling us of people who have heard him sing, and then later asked him "why he wasn't in Las Vegas". He performs at a resthome once a week but wants to break out of that circuit. So, Wayne decides to hire a manager, and settles on ex-video store employee Orlando, who is willing to represent him and promises Wayne that he will make him a star. So first up is a trip to the Thirsty Dog bar on Auckland's K-road, but he decides to have a "pie-stop" on the way, where Wayne buys a pie and smothers Wattie's tinned spaghetti over the top. After this, they go down to the bar where Wayne is able to nab a gig for that night, and we finally get to hear him perform a few of his favourite songs, to an amused crowd.

  • S01E02 Episode Two

After Wayne's spectacular performance at a gig, Orlando is inspired and proposes the idea of an 'international' tour around New Zealand. Wayne gets excited and the two of them plan for the tour, realizing they will need more money and a band to back up Wayne.

  • S01E03 Episode Three

    • September 26, 2006

The episode starts off as Wayne nabs a gig with the 'Good Morning' show on TV one, which is exciting as it gives Wayne a chance to strut his stuff before his tour. Afterwards, Orlando and Wayne start auditioning for members of Wayne's backup tour band at the Weymouth Community Centre, with a panel consisting of Wayne, Orlando, and a few good friends of Waynes judging the entrants. However, while Orlando likes some of the entries, Wayne is horrified with everyone and the two start airing their differences over what they think is right. In the end, they decide not to hire a band, and peace is made over eating fish and chips.

  • S01E04 Episode Four

    • October 3, 2006

As Wayne’s tour approaches, Orlando decides that it’s time to get out-of-shape Wayne to get fit. Orlando takes him to the local swimming pool, where Wayne not only does some exercise, but finds that the swimming pool is a good place to practice his singing, as the echo bouncing off the walls compliments his voice. After getting sidetracked, the boys actively start seeking out some sponsorship for their local tour, as they are very low on funds. Finally, Wayne is able to book a gig at Sky City, Auckland’s most prestigious place for budding musicians, and they schedule a gig for when Wayne comes back from his tour.

  • S01E05 Episode Five

    • October 10, 2006

The tour starts! Wayne and Orlando drive down to Wellington in Wayne’s trusty Daihatsu, where they turn up to the Good Morning show where Wayne had scheduled a gig a few weeks back. The experience further inspires Wayne to work harder, and he enjoys the limelight. With some time to kill after the show, Wayne decides to go down to the parliament house, where they talk to a few MP’s about getting “bad” music off the airwaves, and instead replacing it with the “evergreens”, such as Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdink. After that, they walk around Wellington City where Wayne is shocked to see so called “art” around the town square, and vents his anger about taxpayer money going to these artworks.

  • S01E06 Episode Six

    • October 17, 2006

Wayne and Orlando are off to Rotorua from Wellington, where they are happy and excited to perform. However, when Wayne takes the stage, there is only one lady in the audience. Wayne performs a few songs but at the end of it he is obviously disappointed by the extremely low turnout. The bad luck continues when they make their way back home to Auckland, when the Daihatsu breaks down in Huntly. Orlando calls his parents to come and pick them up, which they do. Also, Wayne starts work on his autobiography, outlining the struggles that he has faced during his time as an aspiring singer.

  • S01E07 Episode Seven

    • October 24, 2006

Wayne and Orlando have made it safely back to Auckland after their Daihatsu broke down in Huntly, but Orlando receives some awful news: Wayne’s gig at Sky City has to be cancelled because the ticket sales were too low. However, after some quick thinking from Orlando, Wayne is allowed to perform in Sky City’s lobby at lunchtime, so the boys, adaptable as can be, quickly organize a stage, a sound crew, and official Wayne Anderson merchandise to be sold. Wayne’s singing draws in the large lunchtime crowd, and a strange man buys all of Wayne’s merchandise singlehandledly. Both the boys are happy after this gig, and it seems to be the fitting finale for the tour. We catch up with Wayne and Orlando one month after the end of the tour. Although Wayne is still aspiring to make it to the top and record an album, he’s returned to his roots by performing at the rest home. He’s happy and hopes to maybe even do another tour soon, but for now he’s happy where he is.
