Faith Yokas rend visite à sa fille Emilie et lui reproche de ne pas être venue à sa cérémonie de promotion. La jeune adolescente lui rappelle qu'elle n'a pas souvent été là pour elle. Le jour même, la nouvelle inspectrice travaille sur sa première enquête. Avec son co-équipier, ils sont appelés pour régler une querelle conjugale. Alors qu'ils sont en train de calmer le couple, ils se rendent compte que du sang tombe du plafond. À l'étage du dessus, ils trouvent un homme mort depuis quatre jours ! L'homme, Aaron Gordon, 25 ans, s'est suicidé en se tirant une balle dans la poitrine...
