Greg travels to a community at Whitecross to trade with its leader Charles Vaughan (Denis Lill) who he last met at Mardell. Jenny is now pregnant so Greg also seeks news of Ruth's whereabouts, as she promised to return to help with the birth. Whilst Greg is away, a fire destroys the grange. The survivors of the blaze are soon reunited with Greg, who leads the way back to Whitecross where they hope to stay, at least until Jenny has had her baby...
Il raccolto non è andato bene e Greg si reca a Whitecross, dove spera di scambiare delle pelli con del grano. Qui incontra una donna di nome Pet che lo conduce dal capo della comunità, Charles Vaughan, una sua vecchia conoscenza. Charles è felice di rivedere Greg e gli chiede subito notizie di Jenny e di Abby. Greg gli spiega che Abby è partita alla ricerca del figlio Peter e che Jenny sta aspettando un figlio da lui. I due uomini hanno molte cose da raccontarsi e Charles convince Greg a fermarsi per la notte. Intanto, a casa, Lizzie viene svegliata da un acre odore di fumo. Le sue urla svegliano Jenny e Paul che si accorgono subito che tutta la costruzione è in fiamme.
