Vittighedstegningen med en enlig mand og en palme på en øde ø, kan man godt glemme alt om. I hele Stillehavet findes der ikke sådan noget som en øde ø. Ligegyldigt hvor isoleret en ø ligger, er det lykkedes dyr og mennesker at finde vej til den fra New Guinea til Fiji og Hawaii. Dyr som saltvandskrokodiller, kæmpe ål, leguaner og mærkværdige frøer er ofte strandet på øerne på spidsen af naturkatastrofer som cykloner eller tsunamier og langt fra alle har overlevet strabadserne. Man har fx regnet ud, at kun én ny art hver 60.000 år klarede sig til Hawaii. De første mennesker i Stillehavet var polyneserne, og deres rejse har ikke været mindre dramatisk og har krævet en evne til at navigere, der ikke er set hverken før eller siden.

In the South Pacific there is no such thing as a deserted island. They may be the most isolated in the world but every one of the region's 20,000 islands has been colonised - from New Guinea, home to birds of paradise and the tribe whose brutal initiation ceremony turns young warriors into 'crocodile' men, to Fiji, French Polynesia and Hawaii. This is the story of the ultimate castaways - from saltwater crocodiles and giant eels to crested iguanas and weird frogs - who succeeded against all odds to reach islands thousands of miles apart. These journeys were no mean feat. It has been estimated that an average of one species every 60,000 years makes it to Hawaii. Incredibly, many of these colonisers made it to these islands on the back of the most violent forces of nature, like cyclones and tsunamis. The voyages of the South Pacific's first people, the Polynesians, were no less remarkable. These journeys were undoubtedly some of the greatest acts of navigation ever undertaken, and they changed the nature of the South Pacific forever.

Tyynessämeressä ei ole autioita saaria, vaikka ne niin etäällä toisistaan sijaitsevatkin. Mutta kuinka kasvit ja eläimet ovat niille kulkeutuneet ja millaisia olivat polynesialaisten merimatkat?

Parmi les îles du Pacifique sud, la Nouvelle-Guinée possède une faune exceptionnelle comme l'échidné à nez long, le kangourou arboricole ou les paradisiers aux plumages colorés. Chez les hommes, les Papous vénèrent le crocodile mangeur d'hommes et lui dédie un rituel initiatique de scarification. Au large, on peut aussi croiser des crocodiles marins nageant vers les îles Salomon. Là, la faune sous-marine se réunit une fois par an à la pleine lune où plusieurs groupes de poissons se reproduisent en même temps, pour le grand bonheur des requins. Comme pour les îles Fidji, de la Polynésie française et Hawaii, il est fort probable que la faune et la flore soient arrivées grâce à la mer et au vent. La force des vagues, le souffle des cyclones auront emporté des passagers sur leur chemin.

„Rozbitkowie” zastanawiają się nad tym, w jaki sposób zwierzęta lub zarodniki roślin pokonały tysiące kilometrów przedostając się z jednej wyspy na drugą, np. z będącej bazą wypadową Nowej Gwinei na odległe Wyspy Salomona i jaką rolę pełniły w tej migracji cyklony. A może pomogli im pradawni żeglarze, przodkowie Polinezyjczyków?

No Pacífico sul não há essa coisa de ilha deserta. Elas podem ser as mais isoladas do mundo mas cada uma das 20 mil ilhas da região foi colonizada - da Nova Guiné, lar de aves do paraíso e de tribos cujo brutal cerimonial de iniciação transforma jovens guerreiros em homens crocodilo, até Fiji, Polinésia francesa e Havaí. Esta é a história dos náufragos definitivos - de crocodilos de água salgada e enguias gigantes a iguanas espinhosas e sapos estranhos - que sobreviveram contra todas as chances e chegaram à ilhas distantes milhares de quilômetros. Estas jornadas não foram feitos comuns. Estima-se que, em média, uma espécie alcança o Havaí a cada 60 mil anos. Incrivelmente, vários destes colonos são trazidos na cauda das mais violentas forças da natureza, como ciclones e tisunamis. As viagens do primeiro povo do Pacífico sul, os polinésios, não são menos notáveis. Estas jornadas foram, sem dúvida, alguns dos maiores atos de navegação realizados, mudando para sempre a natureza do Pacífico sul.

A pesar del aislamiento, las remotas y volcánicas islas del Pacífico han acabado siendo colonizadas por la vegetación y la fauna y, finalmente, por el hombre. Las especies que allí habitan son consideradas enigmáticas y han puesto a prueba a los naturalistas a lo largo de los años (salamanquesas que se reproducen sin la ayuda de un macho, ranas que no necesitan agua para sus renacuajos, etc.). Este capítulo muestra la vida de estos náufragos que conquistaron lo inalcanzable y muestra imágenes, como la de un ave del paraíso, nunca antes vistas.
