All Seasons

Season 2019

  • S2019E01 every single outfit kirsten dunst wears in marie antoinette ????????????

    • October 22, 2019

a truly beautiful coming of age story, "marie antoinette" (written and directed by sofia coppola) is one of our favorite period pieces set in france. with a jam-packed soundtrack, impeccable set design, a fabulous cast and oscar-winning costumes, it's no wonder this was one of our favorite films the year it was released (2006). our favorite moment? the 'i want candy' montage. what's yours? PS: try to spot tom hardy the next time you watch this movie, it comes out of nowhere ????

  • S2019E02 dionne's cutest outfits in the first season of clueless ????????????

    • October 29, 2019

everyone has seen the iconic movie, but have you watched the "clueless" tv show? airing from 1996-1999, the show had some amazing fashion moments with miss dionne davenport (played by stacey dash) having some of our favorites. this montage includes the outfits she wore in the first season, but don't worry, we'll make sure to release clips from the other seasons in the future!

Season 2020

  • S2020E01 all of tracy & evie's outfits in thirteen ????????????

    • January 27, 2020

tracy (played by evan rachel wood) and evie (played by nikki reed) are the main characters of the dark coming-of-age film that is 'thirteen'. the movie not only shows the harsh reality for many young people when trying to navigate the difficulties of teenage-dom, but it's also a perfect time capsule for early y2k fashion.

  • S2020E02 a 2000s "princess" guide ????????????

    • February 25, 2020

as someone who was a teen in the 2000s, i can't help but look back at the era with both fondness and abject horror. some of the trends (and a LOT of the culture) are positively cringe-worthy now, but that doesn't mean i'm any less nostalgic for it. this new series on our channel (yes, there will be more like this) will basically be a crash course to different eras; the music, the movies, the clothes, and the moments. i hope you enjoy~

  • S2020E03 the ultimate chick flick checklist (80+ movies to watch while self-isolating) ????????????

    • March 19, 2020

  • S2020E04 the best white dresses in the history of film ????????????

    • March 23, 2020

part 1 of our best dress series! i based my decisions off of a few different criteria which included: outfits that are generally just iconic/memorable (like princess leia's white dress), dresses i would wear if i could, and outfits that were just brilliant decisions on the costume designer's part. obviously this is just my opinion.

  • S2020E05 the 2010s were an AWFUL time for fashion ????☕️????

    • April 1, 2020

I SAID WHAT I SAID!!! this was my first try at a scripted long-form video so do forgive any audio issues or confusing sentences, i'll do better next time!! i had a cold when i filmed this so i sound a bit stuffed up (at least i hope it was the cold and that i don't sound like that normally). this video is just for fun SO if you like(d) these trends don't take this is a personal attack.

  • S2020E06 the best pink dresses in cinematic history ????????????

    • April 5, 2020

part 2 of our best-dress series! just like in the first video these are arranged in no particular order and were chosen for different criteria like being iconic/memorable, dresses i would wear if i could, and outfits that were just brilliant decisions on the costume designer's part. obviously this is just my opinion.

  • S2020E07 a guide to 90s "grunge" ????????☯️

    • April 23, 2020

as always, this series is meant to be a crash course into a specific era, so before the grunge purists come and attack this video (although we know it'll still happen anyway), we wanted to say that we put "grunge" in quotations for a REASON. we're well-aware that grunge is first and foremost a musical genre that came about in the 80s, but it'd be naive to say that the subculture around it didn't wind up influencing films and fashions of the time. this video is about both grunge and "GRUNGE". some of the movies and cultural moments that we chose to showcase don't necessarily revolve around the grunge movement, but they represent many of the things grunge stood for (anti-establishmentism, social isolation, anxiety, fears of mediocrity, substance dependence, mental illness, and young angst). EDIT: i wrote 1990 for the fall of the berlin wall, it’s 1989! my mistake ????

  • S2020E08 the best red dresses in cinematic history ❤️????????????

    • April 29, 2020

part 3 of our best-dress series! just like in the other videos this list is arranged in no particular order and were chosen for different criteria like being iconic/memorable, dresses i would wear if i could, and outfits that were just brilliant decisions on the costume designer's part. obviously this is just my opinion.

  • S2020E09 15 movies with absolutely amazing costume design ????????????

    • May 2, 2020

if you've been watching the channel for a while then you know that i have a HUGE love for film and fashion (it's basically the entire reason i started making these youtube videos). i wanted to try a different kind of video that was a little more opinionated, and i wound up with this! considering how many films have been released in the last hundred years (and will be released in the future), i wouldn't be surprised if some of my choices change, but for now these are my favorites (when it comes to clothes, not in general). obviously it's just my opinion, so if you disagree that's fine (just don't be mean about it ok). what movie has your favorite costume design?

  • S2020E10 the best orange dresses in the history of film ????????????

    • May 3, 2020

two of these videos in one week?? who am i. part 4 of our best-dress series! just like in the other videos this list is arranged in no particular order and were chosen for different criteria like being iconic/memorable, dresses i would wear if i could, and outfits that were just brilliant decisions on the costume designer's part. obviously this is just my opinion.

  • S2020E11 the problem with belle's dress ????????⚜️

    • May 9, 2020

this wasn't a video i planned on making, but i got SO many requests to do a video on costume design decisions i dislike and this was one of the first films that came to mind (the other is mentioned in this video). i LOVE the animated beauty and the beast film so much that i had the dish set and the computer game and watched the sequel every christmas as a child. i was really excited for the live action film when it came out, and of course, because i love clothes, i couldn't help but feel disappointed with some of the costume design choices. i have absolutely NOTHING against jacqueline durran or emma watson, i just think this could have been better. obviously all the views in this video are my own, if you disagree that's okay!

  • S2020E12 why hermione's dress HAS to be pink ????❄️????????‍♀️

    • May 11, 2020

somewhat inspired by my last video (the problem with belle's dress) i decided to make a video in DEFENSE of a costume design decision that many people hated. which ironically enough, also involved emma watson. this is one of those costume choices that continues to upset people in the harry potter fandom to this day, and is one that i've come to understand over the years. what're your thoughts on it?

  • S2020E13 the best yellow dresses in cinematic history ????????????

    • May 12, 2020

part 5 of our best-dress series! just like in the other videos this list is arranged in no particular order and were chosen for different criteria like being iconic/memorable, dresses i would wear if i could, and outfits that were just brilliant decisions on the costume designer's part. obviously this is just my opinion.

  • S2020E14 what happened to ariel's princess dress ????????☀️

    • May 15, 2020

i had multiple people ask my thoughts on ariel's dress from the little mermaid movie, so i decided make this! i come off a bit harsher than i intended cus i wrote the script when i was in a "mood" ???? i don't HATE the dress i promise, i just think it's the weakest of all the disney princess gowns. what do you think?

  • S2020E15 the importance of scarlett's dresses in gone with the wind ????????????

    • May 19, 2020

just a little disclaimer: i’m in no way condoning or romanticizing the racism depicted in the 'gone with the wind' book or film, but i do think it’s possible to show appreciation for something without approving of everything about it. if you’re interested in learning more about the racist implications of 'gone with the wind' i recommend watching coldcrashpictures video on the subject or if you just want to know more about the film's production you should check out bekindrewind’s video. i’ll link both of them below.

  • S2020E16 the fascinating history of dorothy's ruby slippers ????????????

    • May 20, 2020

if i could only save 10 pieces of movie memorabilia from certain destruction, dorothy's ruby slippers would definitely be one of them. her ruby slippers from the 1939 wizard of oz film are as commonly associated with her character as judy garland is, which i think is saying a lot considering they're usually depicted as silver.

  • S2020E17 how we failed megan fox ????????????

    • May 24, 2020

read this article for a nice rundown of michael bay being a creep (https://www.eonline.com/news/769220/m...). idk WHY the audio sounds so weird in this, sorry, i'm hoping to buy a better mic soon. and because i know someone will mention it in the comments, i deliberately chose not to talk about megan fox’s ex-husband or rumored partner because honestly, we should be able to have a conversation about a woman without bringing up the men she may or may not be involved with. and i know someone is going to say “well she worked with michael bay again on TMNT so he can’t be that bad”, how many actresses had to work with harvey weinstein on numerous occasions? how many women have to work with people who harass them daily?

  • S2020E18 the best green dresses in cinematic history ????????????

    • May 28, 2020

part 6 of our best-dress series! green is my favorite color so i had a bit of trouble narrowing this down, hence how long this is in comparison to others in this series ???? just like in the other videos this list is arranged in no particular order and were chosen for different criteria like being iconic/memorable, dresses i would wear if i could, and outfits that were just brilliant decisions on the costume designer's part. obviously this is just my opinion.

  • S2020E19 kirsten dunst: the most underrated actress of her generation? ????????????

    • June 5, 2020

a video that pretty much no one wanted but that i decided to make anyway ???? a thing i meant to mention in the video, but forgot, is that by "underrated" i don't mean "unpopular", because obviously she's still getting cast in things fairly regularly. but she isn't receiving recognition, by both her industry and the general populace. if someone asked you "could kirsten dunst win an oscar" you might hesitate because you're probably most familiar with her work when she was younger, even though she's definitely capable. she just needs the role and the support that'll get her there.

  • S2020E20 ranking 10 different versions of cinderella's ballgown ????????????????‍♀️

    • June 15, 2020

my longest video essay so far! it was a lot of fun but also really time consuming, so i hope you like it!

  • S2020E21 sleeping beauty's dress: blue or pink? ????????????????‍♀️

    • June 20, 2020

my take on the age old question: should aurora's dress be blue or pink? i definitely have my preference (blue), but i can see why fans of the pink dress feel the way they do. at the end of the day i think it's just a matter of preference with no right or wrong answer.

  • S2020E22 how sex and the city changed fashion in the 2000s ????????????

    • June 26, 2020

rewatching this show to prepare for this video was excruciatingly painful, things have changed an awful lot in 2 decades. while MANY of the outfits in sex and the city are an eyesore, it'd be a lie if i said they weren't influential at the time. here's a breakdown of some of the fashion trends that sex and the city had a hand in popularizing in the 2000s.

  • S2020E23 proof that tiana is the most stylish disney princess ????✨????

    • June 30, 2020

i swear, this isn't a disney channel, i just happen to really love the princesses and their clothes. this'll be the last disney-related video for a little while but stay tuned for other fun content! i can't believe we're nearly at 100k subscribers, thanks for sticking around and watching my silly little videos!

  • S2020E24 ranking 10 iconic doll lines from the 2000s ????????????

    • July 11, 2020

as you can probably tell, i got a bit carried away with this topic. i thought it'd be something you all wouldn't be interested in, but i got so many requests to do it after the poll in the community tab that i couldn't resist! this is my longest video essay so far and definitely one of the ones that required the most research, i didn't realize how many different dolls there were in the 2000s! which of these dolls did you want as a kid?

  • S2020E25 y2k fashion trends that are about to make a comeback ????????????

    • August 8, 2020

i'm finally back with another video essay! a little less movie focused and more about fashion in general. as someone who actually lived through these trends it's pretty weird seeing y2k outfits and fashion return, but that's probably how people felt about the 90s comeback as well. what y2k trend are you most excited about?

  • S2020E26 Q&A with mona may: the costume designer for clueless, enchanted, and more ???????????? (the gurlz room ep1)

    • August 21, 2020

the first episode in a new series on the channel where i talk to different people about film and fashion. our very first guest is costume designer mona may, who's done amazing work on films like clueless, never been kissed, and so much more! i asked her a bunch of questions about some of my favorite films and even asked some questions you had. enjoy~

  • S2020E27 everything wrong with mulan 2020 (a review) ????⚔️????

    • September 9, 2020

hi everyone! long time no see. i had absolutely no intention to review this movie but after watching it i couldn't help myself. it completely loses the heart of the original animated mulan film but honestly, what did we expect? disney needs to stop ruining our childhoods with these live action adaptations.

  • S2020E28 iconic fashion moments: marilyn monroe's pink dress ????????????

    • September 16, 2020

one of the most recognizable dresses of all time (at least in my opinion) is marilyn monroe's pink gown from gentlemen prefer blondes. not only is it iconic in the context of the film, but it's been replicated dozens of times by other celebrities. today's video is all about this infamous dress and the many recreations of it. what iconic fashion moment do you want to see me cover next?

  • S2020E29 iconic fashion moments: the versace jungle dress ????????????

    • September 22, 2020

the fact that this was trending today is a complete coincidence but you know what, i won't complain. if you follow me on twitter then you already know how i feel about this green versace dress... what're your thoughts?

  • S2020E30 enola holmes should've been a tv show (a review) ????????????

    • September 25, 2020

i watched the new enola holmes movie and i couldn't resist reviewing it! it was a super fun watch that gave me some hope for netflix (they've been churning out some pretty awful content lately). the only problem? it should've been a tv show instead. what did you think of the enola holmes film?

  • S2020E31 analyzing the outfits in mean girls ????????????

    • October 3, 2020

“on october 3rd he asked me what day it was....” i’m back with the first of many style analyses! mean girls is one of my favorite movies when it comes to contemporary costuming and we have to thank mary jane fort for being the brilliant mind behind them. i hope you enjoy this mean girls style analysis and do let me know which of the plastics outfits are your favorite!

  • S2020E32 emily in paris sucked (a review) ????????✨

    • October 7, 2020

if you saw me live-tweeting while watching this show (https://twitter.com/ModernGurlzz) then you knew this review was coming. i honestly gave emily in paris a fair shot, i like lily collins and i've enjoyed the other projects costume designer patricia field has worked on. but this? this was a mess. the main character is completely unlikeable, the side characters barely have personalities, and it's hardly an accurate depiction of paris. what did you think of emily in paris?

  • S2020E33 the best blue dresses in cinematic history ????????????

    • October 13, 2020

part 7 of our best-dress series! blue is one my favorite colors hence the length of this video ???? just like in the other videos this list is arranged in no particular order and were chosen for different criteria like being iconic/memorable, dresses i would wear if i could, and outfits that were just brilliant decisions on the costume designer's part. obviously this is just my opinion.

  • S2020E34 cinderella's dress is NOT blue ????

    • October 16, 2020

i've mentioned this in practically every video i've made about disney princesses but i figured it was about time i did a video all about cinderella's SILVER dress. that's right, silver, not blue. what are your thoughts on cinderella's divisive dress?

  • S2020E35 the witches remake is actually GOOD? (a review) ????????‍♀️????????

    • October 24, 2020

back again with another movie review. in a year of terrible reboots and remakes the witches (2020) is a breath of fresh air. it isn't a perfect film but it's still loads of fun and most importantly, scary, at least for its target demographic. what did you think of the witches remake?

  • S2020E36 harley quinn style analysis: suicide squad & birds of prey ????????????

    • October 27, 2020

birds of prey has been one of my favorite films of 2020 and i knew i wanted to do a video all about its awesome costumes (designed by erin benach). compared to what harley quinn wears in 2016's suicide squad (costumes by kate hawley) we're seeing a whole new person with an entirely different fashion sense. which of harley's outfits is your favorite?

  • S2020E37 we need to talk about the craft: legacy (a review) ????????✨

    • November 2, 2020

1996's the craft is one of my all-time favorite movies. the fashion, the music, the acting, the message. it all brings me so much joy, which is pretty funny considering how dark the subject matter is. when they announced the craft sequel i was understandably concerned about it, and while in some ways it exceeded my expectations, in other ways, it failed. here are my thoughts on the craft: legacy.

  • S2020E38 a legally blonde style analysis ????????????

    • November 11, 2020

i've mentioned before how amazing contemporary costuming can be and legally blonde is one of those films that really excels at it. we fully understand these characters and the world they're living in. there's no denying that the outfits in legally blonde are VERY of their time, but i think that's part pf their charm. and come on, the message still holds up today.

  • S2020E39 Q&A with mary jane fort: costume designer for mean girls & bring it on ???????????? (the gurlz room ep2)

    • November 17, 2020

that's right! i had the amazing opportunity to speak to costume designer mary jane fort about her work on mean girls and bring it on. learning about her process, especially the emphasis on character, was so fascinating.

  • S2020E40 "chick flicks" deserve your respect ????????????

    • November 20, 2020

i've been wanting to make this video for ages now and was finally able to sit down and finish it! i've felt this way about "chick flicks" for years and it felt incredibly cathartic to be able to voice my thoughts on the matter. how do you feel about chick flicks?

  • S2020E41 the devil wears prada style analysis ????????☕️

    • November 26, 2020

you can stop asking for it now ???? today’s video is a style analysis of the 2006 devil wears prada film starring anne hathaway, meryl streep, and emily blunt. the costumes were created by the legend patricia field, and they’re perfect. which character has your favorite style?

  • S2020E42 what color are sleeping beauty's eyes? ???? ???? ✨

    • December 5, 2020

just a quick and easy video clarifying something i got dragged for in a previous video: sleeping beauty's eyes, are they blue or violet? well... i definitely have an opinion about it.

  • S2020E43 a history of body swap films: from vice versa to freaky (review) ????????????

    • December 8, 2020

it's been awhile, but i'm finally back with another movie review~ i'd been looking forward to freaky all year and was relieved that it finally moved to streaming (i'm not trying to get sick for a movie????). what's your favorite body swap film?

  • S2020E44 we have to talk about the winx club reboot ????‍♀️????????

    • December 11, 2020

i, like pretty much every 20-something on twitter, was positively livid after seeing the new trailer for the winx club reboot, fate: the winx club saga. it captured none of the magic of the original winx club series and seemed like a copy-paste of every other gritty teen drama from the last 5 years. WHERE IS THE ORIGINALITY!? it's so sad to see the shows i grew up watching get destroyed by men who couldn't care less about staying faithful to the source material.

  • S2020E45 analyzing the outfits in jawbreaker ????????????

    • December 22, 2020

we're back with another outfit analysis! today's video is all about 1999's jawbreaker, a highly underrated clique flick. if you like heathers or mean girls you should definitely consider watching this movie if you haven't yet. while plot-wise it's not the most original, the 1980s-meets-1950s outfits are memorable af. which girl in jawbreaker has your favorite style?

  • S2020E46 batman & robin is a misunderstood masterpiece ????????❄️

    • December 28, 2020

i know i've said i'm "not a superhero fan" before, but i supposed i should've been more specific: i'm not a "2009-2020 superhero fan". i do adore the original batman franchise, i owned the DVD box set and everything. but i've always felt very out of place within the fandom because unlike everyone else, i actually like joel schumacher's batman & robin. yes, batn*pples and all.

Season 2021

  • S2021E01 2021 fashion trends and predictions ????????⏳

    • January 5, 2021

this video was supposed to come out before 2021 began but... stuff happened. sorry and happy new year!! this video is a list of my fashion predictions for 2021, nothing is groundbreaking, but if you want to learn more about specific fashion trends and where they take inspiration from then this is the video for you!

  • S2021E02 analyzing effie trinket’s outfits in the hunger games ????????????

    • January 13, 2021

the hunger games was immensely popular back in the day but i feel like people rarely talk about its amazing costuming, with each film featuring a distinctive look that reflects the passage of time and each individual outfit having deeper meaning. today's style analysis video is all about effie trinket and her many outfits throughout the hunger games franchise. which is your favorite?

  • S2021E03 the history behind the vivienne westwood pearl choker ????✨????

    • January 22, 2021

a cute and quick video all about 2020's hottest accessory: the vivienne westwood pearl choker. we've all seen it, but do you know the history behind it? what are your thoughts on the necklace, do you love it or hate it?

    • February 10, 2021

  • S2021E06 Q&A with mina le: what's it like being a youtuber? ???????????? (the gurlz room ep 3)

    • February 19, 2021

you've all been asking for it, so @Mina Le and i decided to make a little video all about fashion, film, and being "youtubers" (don't worry, this won't be the last time you'll see us together). we had a little TOO much fun filming this so my apologies if this seems a little rambly and nonsensical. who would you like to see on the gurlz room next?

  • S2021E07 analyzing the outfits in confessions of a teenage drama queen ????????????

    • February 23, 2021

contemporary costume design often gets the short end of the stick when it comes to critical acclaim, so i'm setting out to change that. one of my favorite films from the 2000s, confessions of a teenage drama queen is unabashedly femme and has some of the most interesting costume design for a teen comedy that i've ever seen. starring lindsay lohan and megan fox, the film is must-watch for any lover of costume design and y2k fashion.

  • S2021E08 iconic fashion moments: jackie kennedy's pink suit ????????????

    • March 11, 2021

  • S2021E09 the evolution of doja cat's say so ✨????????????

    • March 17, 2021

after more than a year of performing her hit song say so, doja cat has announced that she's retiring the bop and moving on to a new project... which means i can finally cover it! i've been incredibly impressed with the range of creativity that doja cat and her team have showed with say so and i wanted to use this video to highlight all of her performances of it. which was your favorite?

  • S2021E10 how the economy affects the height of high heels ????????????

    • March 26, 2021

have you ever wondered why certain years we're drawn to higher shoes than others? well, what if it had to do with the economy? there have been many discussions about the height of women's shoes and how it correlates to the state of the economy. in today's video i look at a century's worth of fashion trends to see if that seems to be the case. and spoiler: the answer seems to be yes! after a period of hardship we tend to go the other direction and dress luxuriously, and what better way to do that by wearing absurdly high heels?

  • S2021E11 awful fashion trends of the 2010s ????????????

    • April 8, 2021

a year ago i made my very first video essay on this channel and it's crazy to see how far ModernGurlz has come in the last twelve months. this was supposed to be a funny april fools day video (oops), oh well! today's video i'm talking all about fashion from the 2010s and some of what i consider to be the worst fashion trends of the decade. spoiler: it's everything
