as always, this series is meant to be a crash course into a specific era, so before the grunge purists come and attack this video (although we know it'll still happen anyway), we wanted to say that we put "grunge" in quotations for a REASON. we're well-aware that grunge is first and foremost a musical genre that came about in the 80s, but it'd be naive to say that the subculture around it didn't wind up influencing films and fashions of the time. this video is about both grunge and "GRUNGE". some of the movies and cultural moments that we chose to showcase don't necessarily revolve around the grunge movement, but they represent many of the things grunge stood for (anti-establishmentism, social isolation, anxiety, fears of mediocrity, substance dependence, mental illness, and young angst). EDIT: i wrote 1990 for the fall of the berlin wall, it’s 1989! my mistake ????
