Claus Valca et Lavie Head, âgés de 15 ans, sont respectivement pilote et navigateur d'un Vanship et travaillent comme messagers pour le Guilde. I protagonisti sono due ragazzi, Claus Valca e Lavie Head, apprendisti piloti di vanship con un grande potenziale; i loro padri, a loro volta piloti, sono morti nel tentativo di attraversare il Grand Stream per portare un messaggio di pace a Disith. Claus e Lavie lavorano come corrieri per la Norkìa Van Ship Organization (una società di spedizioni) con la loro vanship. La loro missione è quella di recapitare un messaggio al Marchese Mad-Thane, un nobile capitano della Claim Solais, una aeronave della flotta dell'Impero di Anatore, il quale ormai è da tempo immemore in guerra con l'Impero di Disith. La battaglia sta per iniziare e i fucilieri, tra cui uno di nome Mallin Shetland, si stanno preparando per l'offensiva contro le navi nemiche. Intanto la Gilda, potente organizzazione superpartes apparentemente "neutrale", controlla la battaglia dettando le regole come dei giudici e da il via allo scontro. Claus e Lavie, così, si ritrovano in mezzo allo scontro, ma sono determinati a portare a termine la loro missione di corrieri. Intanto la battaglia sembra andare a favore della flotta di Anatore, costringendo alla ritirata Disith. Claus e Lavie giungono sulla nave di Mad-Thane e consegnano il messaggio. Tutto sembra filare liscio quando, improvvisamente, la flotta di Disith lancia un massiccio attacco dall'alto alla flotta Anatoriana, infrangendo le "regole della cavalleria" e l'accordo della Gilda. In realtà è la Gilda stessa che, sotto ordine del Maestro Delphine (massima autorità dentro la Gilda), sta appoggiando Disith, in modo che i territori di Minagith cadano sotto gli avversari.
