It was around 2:40 pm on October 4, 1992 when El Al Flight 1862, a Boeing 747 cargo aircraft, made a stopover at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. The 13-year-old aircraft was owned by El Al, a then state-owned Israeli airline famous for its nearly flawless safety record ever since its beginnings back in 1949. In Hebrew, El Al means “to the skies”, a name that would be put to test on that particular day.

In 2007, the parade/festival had to be moved from Berlin to the Ruhr area, mainly because the city’s authorities were threatening to ban it, for safety and environmental concerns. As it turned out, moving the festival from #berlin was a good choice. In the following years, attendance skyrocketed from 500,000 in Berlin to over a million visitors.
