Robert Earl Wise was an eclectic and acclaimed film director, producer and editor who is most often identified with the two grand-scale musicals that won him Academy Awards, West Side Story (1961) and The Sound of Music (1965). His movies included such diverse genres as Orson Welles's masterpiece Citizen Kane (1941), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), Executive Suite (1954), Run Silent, Run Deep (1958), Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956), I Want to Live! (1958), Odds Against Tomorrow (1959) and The Haunting (1963).
