Handlung Der Feinschmecker Nero Wolfe reist nach Kanawha Spa, um an einem Kochwettbewerb als Ehrengast teilzunehmen. Dort ist ein Schreiben eingegangen, in dem vor den Machenschften Marko Vukows gewarnt wird, Wolfes Freund. Dina Laszio behelligt Wolfe zu dessen Verdruß noch mit der Behauptung, jemand habe versucht ihren Mann zu vergiften, Philipp Laszio.
