Mnohé živočišné druhy vyskytující se jen na Srí Lance žijí výlučně ve střední hornaté oblasti. Mlžné lesy zde však ohrožuje obchod s čajem.

Meeresschildkröten kehren an Sri Lankas Strände zurück, um am Ort ihrer Geburt selbst Eier abzulegen. The forests of Sri Lanka rise above the rest of the country like islands out of the sea. Here, species found nowhere else in the world have been marooned on high forest plateaus, isolated from the rest of Sri Lanka, unable to cross from one forest patch to another. They have evolved into highly diverse, self-supporting arboreal outposts – between which bats and birds fly with messages from outside. These forests are islands within an island – to step into them is to travel to another world where life is sustained by cloud swells and dancing mists. And as this mountainous terrain has combined with not one, but two, monsoons, a distinct microclimate has formed among these cloud-cloaked trees. Nearly half the island’s flowering plants are found here and amidst the twisted vine and creepers, rare and delicate orchids dot the landscape. Blue magpies, red-slender loris and purple-faced monkeys inhabit this strange, colourful – and ever diminishing - world. But although forest habitats are in decline thanks to the encroachment of man, one thing remains certain. As long as it has water to sustain it, life –the fabulous, curious, glorious life that flourishes on these high peaks – remains.

В лесной подстилке охотятся богато разукрашенные хищники, а среди ветвей зарождаются новые поколения. Каждый уровень леса, отдельное царство со своими уникальными видами. В этих джунглях, среди деревьев нашлось место и человеку. Шри-Ланка и её потаённые сокровища веками манили к себе путешественников со всего мира. Перед ними открывалась страна, породившая великую цивилизацию, а по природному разнообразию не уступающая целому континенту. Бескрайний океан окружает остров длинной всего 300 км., на котором яростно кипит борьба за существование. И всё же, даже на этом клочке земли есть место где конкуренция особенно жестока. Это Облачные леса Шри-Ланки.
Los bosques de Sri Lanka se elevan sobre el resto del país como islas del mar. Aquí, especies que no se encuentran en ningún otro lugar del mundo han quedado aisladas en las altas mesetas del bosque, aisladas del resto de Sri Lanka, incapaces de cruzar de un bosque a otro. Han evolucionado hasta convertirse en puestos de avanzada arbóreos muy diversos y autosuficientes, entre los cuales los murciélagos y las aves vuelan con mensajes desde el exterior. Estos bosques son islas dentro de una isla; entrar en ellos es viajar a otro mundo donde la vida se sustenta por las nubes y las nieblas. Y como este terreno montañoso se ha combinado con no uno, sino dos monzones, se ha formado un microclima distintivo entre estos árboles envueltos en nubes. Casi la mitad de las plantas con flores de la isla se encuentran aquí y en medio de la enredadera y enredaderas retorcidas, orquídeas raras y delicadas salpican el paisaje. Las urracas azules, los loris esbeltos y los monos de cara violeta habitan en este mundo extraño, colorido y siempre en disminución. Pero aunque los hábitats forestales están en declive gracias a la invasión del hombre, una cosa sigue siendo cierta. Mientras tenga agua para sustentarla, la vida -la fabulosa, curiosa y gloriosa vida que florece en estas altas cumbres- permanece.
