Armee unter General Heinrici im Frontabschnitt Mitte die Stellung bei nur geringen Verlusten zu halten. Vergeblich rennt die Rote Armee in den sogenannten Rollbahnschlachten seit dem Sommer gegen die eingegrabenen Landser an. Otto, der noch immer mit dem Tod von Erich hadert, wartet derweil mit seinen Kameraden auf das Einsetzten des Winters.
