Die 55. Wache wird zu einem schweren Verkehrsunfall gerufen, bei dem ein voll besetztes Auto Feuer gefangen hat. Als Feuerwehr, Polizei und Rettungsdienst am Unglücksort ankommen, müssen sie hilflos zusehen, wie die vier Jugendlichen im Wagen verbrennen. Niemand hat jetzt Lust, nach Hause zu gehen, und so schließen sich die Rettungskräfte zusammen und ziehen durch die Stadt. Doc, Faith und Sully setzen sich in ein Café und reden sich den Frust von der Seele, als eine junge Frau nach dem Bus fragt. Doc bietet ihr an, sie nach Hause zu fahren. Da das Mädchen namens Shannon aber noch gar nicht nach Hause möchte, spazieren alle zusammen noch eine Runde durch den Central Park. Dort sehen sie, wie ein Obdachloser zusammengeschlagen wird und schreiten ein.
Davis, Bobby und Alex Taylor kehren in ein Kneipe ein. Anschließend muss sich Davis auf der Rückfahrt übergeben und ein junger Mann namens Darren taucht auf und bietet seine Hilfe an. Unterdessen enden Kim, Jimmy und Carlos auf einer Bowlingbahn, wo sie von einem Pärchen - Gary und Chelsea - zu einem Spiel eingeladen werden. Am Ende treffen sich alle auf Coney Island wieder und betrachten in der Wärme eines Lagerfeuers den Sonnenaufgang über dem Meer. The deaths of four teenagers in a fiery car crash profoundly affects the third watch, who were forced to stand by helplessly, unable to save the victims. They congregate at the end of the shift to dispell their sadness and anger at the horrific images of the crash. Faith, Sully and Doc spend time sitting quietly in a cafe; Ty, Bobby, Carlos and Alex go to a bar; and Kim, Bosco and Jimmy go bowling. As evening turns into day, Faith's group meets up with a young woman, Ty's group meets up with a young man, and Kim's group meets up with a young couple in love. At dawn, everyone ends up at the a beach and they build a bonfire. As the flames flicker, we see a flashback to the moments immediately preceding the car crash and discover that the young people whom they met during the course of the evening are the spirits of the teenagers who died in the crash, who were sent back down to earth to tell them that the crash could not have been prevented, and they are not to blame for being unable to
