Devils Lake in North Dakota is a large sprawling prairie lake. Just 43,000 acres in 1993, it's grown substantially since, rising four feet last year alone. Those four feet have grown the lake from 120,000 acres to the 168 thousand acres it is today. Lund pro staffers Johnnie Candle and Scottie Brewer liken it to fishing a new lake each year. In spring, the shallow back bays are first to warm and attract post-spawn walleyes in search of bait fish. Finding water temperatures approaching 60 degrees, they not only locate active walleyes but they also find some of Devils Lake's well-known white bass and Northern pike, giving them a chance to show us a little bit of what Devil's Lake has to offer.
The 91-mile-long Flaming Gorge reservoir on the Wyoming / Utah border is known for producing oversized Kokanee salmon and trophy-class lake trout, making it a great destination fishery for both species. Specialized gear and tactics have been developed in Western reservoirs to catch Kokanee salmon. Most baits are trolled to elicit reaction strikes from these plankton-eating pelagic fish. In mid-June, Lund Pro staff's Dave Habets and Don Ray Limb use their electronics to find and target Kokanee at their preferred temperature of 52 degrees. They adjust and hone their spread as they catch fish at differing depths using flasher squid combos on downriggers. Watch as they troll the river channel until they connect with this sporty and delicious fish.
This past season, walleye fishing on Lake Winnibigoshish (AKA Big Winnie) in north central Minnesota was on fire! Everyone was catching impressive numbers of eater-sized fish in mid-August, with surface temps in the upper 70s, finding walleyes in as little as three feet of water in the daytime. The full sun wasn’t likely, but the massive amounts of bait in the shallows drew in huge schools of hungry Winnie walleyes. Some of Lund Pro Tony Roach's best childhood memories were fishing Winnie's shallow water bite, and he knows from experience that the bite can last the entire season. Tony is joined today by his good friend Nate Brown from McArdle's Resort. The day promises to be filled with action - they both know they'll catch a lot of walleyes but hope they can find a few big ones.
Lund Pro Brian "Bro" Brosdals is a well-known and busy Minnesota walleye guide, but when he gets a rare day off in the Open Water season, he and his wife Heather head out searching for bluegills. But not just any bluegills - they want the big ones! The true bulls - the bump-headed dinner plate size - true slab bluegilasaurus-type kills. Unfortunately, these trophy class fish are easily over-harvested so finding and catching them is often more difficult than catching a 30-inch walleye or a six-pound smallmouth. Using Bros drop shot rigging stealth floats with walleye-size leeches, they managed to coax a few of these beasts to bite. Later, they switch gears for a bit more action and fish an active school of crappies.
Occasionally, technological breakthroughs can change the fundamentals of how anglers fish. Recently, the use of forward-facing sonar has changed not only how anglers search for fish but even the very tactics used to catch these fish. Kyle and Britta Peterson have used forward-facing sonar since its introduction several years ago, and it's become a significant part of their favorite way to fish walleye. They find a large loner fish in outer space, somewhat related to but suspended far from traditional walleye structure, with a sharp shoot, a drop shot rig, and giant cow tongue-sized leech right in their face. In real-time, they can watch and work the fish until they trigger a strike. Trying to catch these fish without forward-facing sonar would be like shooting a duck blindfolded, but this powerful tool can turn average days into amazing days of fishing.
The gigantic 360,000-acre Lac Seul located in remote Northwest Ontario, has a fabled reputation as an angler's paradise. This is the place to go for a legitimate chance at catching a musky of legendary status. Lund Pro Ben Beatty is the guy you want leading the charge on your Lac Seul musky mission. This lake is not for the faint of heart, and his years of experience guiding on the lake are priceless. Anglers need to be on their A-game every cast. When that activity window opens, you better be ready because Lac Seul is one of the best places on the planet to catch the fish of your dreams.
Like many anglers, Lund Pro Dave Wasness' love of fishing started early. He was lucky to have his dad and grandfather regularly take him out on North Dakota and Minnesota waters. As a fishing pro, volunteer, and educator, he's committed to passing that love of fishing on to the next generation of kids. Today Dave is out on Otter Tail Lake in Western Minnesota with his niece and nephew for a day of fishing, targeting walleyes in shallow water. Even though Otter Tail Lake has a ton of classic walleye structure, the cabbage edge in four to nine feet of water is often an excellent location to find active walleyes. Ripping worms through the weeds, they find that the walleyes are still snapping even during midday, and that makes for a fun day on the water.
Lund Pro Travis Tourond comes from a family of fishing guides. His father and grandfather both grew up guiding on Lake Wabigoon and many lakes in the Dryden, Ontario area. With a background like that, Travis obviously loves fishing and the outdoors and wants to share his passion and skills with his fishing buddy, Brooks Atwood. What better way to do it than to spend a mid-summer day on Wabigoon targeting smallmouth bass, walleyes, northern pike, and even casting for some evening muskies. Using jerk baits, jigs, plastics hair jigs, and the classic Mepps spinner, they proceed to get dialed in, catching a bunch of fish and having some fun doing it.
Angling Edge's Jeremy Smith, Jeff Simpson, and Mike Hehner, along with Wired2Fish's Ryan DeChaine and friends, set out on an epic fishing adventure, driving their boats over 1300 miles to the classic fishing destination of massive Reindeer Lake in Northern Saskatchewan, a lake normally only accessed via fly-in. Arriving the second week of September, they hope to find both lake trout up on shallow reef staging to spawn and huge pike tucked far into the shallow base. By towing their Lund boats, they can pack all the tackle, rods, reels, and electronics they could possibly need. All the preparation and anticipation for a chance to catch the biggest fish of your life is half the fun.
Lund Pro staffer Jeff Anderson and local guide and buddy Jean-Paul Tessier follow the fall emerald shiner run up the Rainy River in search of the hungry walleyes that follow them. Once water temperatures cool into the 50’s in fall, the emerald shiners in Lake of the Woods begin their annual migration up the Rainy River in the millions. Heading out on an unseasonably warm mid-October day, they plan to keep it simple, have fun, and fish jigs and shiners near current scenes at mouths of tributaries. After finding a prime location to spot lock on, packs of active walleyes roam through and repeatedly thumped their jigs. It is good fishing action, and most people know that on the Rainy River in fall there's always a shot at the big one.
