James befindet sich mit der 'Charlotte Rhodes' auf der Heimreise nach Liverpool, als er auf hoher See ein verlassenes Schiff entdeckt, die 'Maria da Gloria''. Er nimmt das Schiff in Schlepp, obwohl er dabei seine Ladung Apfelsinen riskiert, sollte die Rückfahrt zu lange dauern.

The Charlotte Rhodes comes across a seemingly abandoned ship, the Maria da Gloria, and James goes onboard to explore her. He finds the ship untended, crewless and her cargo ruined. He sets to jettisoning the spoiled sugar and taking the ship in tow for salvage. On one of her visits to Anne, Elizabeth realises that Anne is pregnant, and though James is sinking every penny into regaining control of the Onedin Line Steamship Company, Elizabeth tells her that she must get out of the warehouse and into a proper house. Once Robert finds out --- and then Sarah, of course --- there's little chance of the secret remaining so any more. Sarah does not take the news well though, seeing their chances of her son inheriting the company on James' retirement or death disappear. James of course is delighted --- an heir at last to his shipping empire! Naturally, the needs of a mother-to-be soon begin to make themselves known on the shipowner, and Elizabeth wastes no time trying to convince him to move i

James Onedin útközben rátalál egy elhagyott hajóra, a "Maria da Glóriá"-ra és azt tervezi, hogy partra vontatja, jó pénzt remélve az akciótól. Ann-et egy nap váratlan rosszullét keríti hatalmába és azt reméli, végre teherbe esett. Robert Onedin is nagyon örül a lehetőségnek, azonban neje, Sarah öröme nem felhőtlen: attól tart, ha Jamesnek majd fia születik, ő lesz az Onedin-vállalat örököse és nem az ő fiuk. Samuel. James csupán látszólag mondott le a "Maria da Gloria" megvételéről. Valójában mindenképpen meg akarja venni, de csupán 500 fontért, mivel úgy véli, korábban rabszolga szállító hajó volt, amit a törvény szigorúan büntet.. Azonban valószínűleg gyors hajó, tehát ideális lenne sürgős szállításokra. Daniel Fogarty azonban szintén szemet vetett a "Maria da Gloriára".
