We're back on the road with Lewis from GME, and heading even further west to Murray Sunset National Park and beyond! Along the way we take a couple of historic detours, grab some desert driving to prepare for our upcoming Special, before finally crossing the border into South Australia, where we head to Loveday 4x4 for some serious offroad action! We jump on the jetskis, hit 160kmh in a CanAm, and Jess races a 3rd Grader on the track!
The Simpson Desert is an iconic touring destination, a place that every 4WDer dreams of crossing! It's a rite of passage, a box that must be ticked... a bucket list adventure! Crossing the Simmo by normal 4WD? Nah, that'd be too easy! This year the Offroad Adventure Show are crossing the Simmo, "OR BUST" style! Back in 1962, the Sprigg family headed into the vast Simpson Desert in a G60 Patrol, and so we've challenged our team to cross the dunes in other vehicles that were available way back in the 1960s. While Jess and Jamie have got themselves an immaculate Series 2 Land Rover that's proven it's offroad credentials around Australia, Leash and Borgy are going to be doing it the hard way, in a 1943 Chevrolet Blitz! Will the vehicles be ready? Will all our hosts make it to the starting line? And if they do, how will they go crossing the 1000+ sand dunes that make up the Simpson Desert?
Well, the Blitz just managed to roll into Birdsville last week under it's own steam last week, but now the real work begins. Is it just a blown head gasket or is there something even more problematic hiding in this antique engine? Is the adventure over before it's begun? Will Matt, Leash, & Kal get it running again? How many camel pies will Jamie eat in the meantime? And will anyone manage to get up Big Red?
With Big Red behind them, and the Blitz re-joining the convoy, it's time for the crew to hit the desert. First stop is "Nemesis" - the 2nd largest dune in the Simmo, which can be just as challenging as Big Red. So challenging that we manage just 12km in 1 day, as we drive into the fading light to find camp... There's going to be winching, recoveries, break downs, and busted rigs...
It's taken plenty of time, but we've finally made it to Poeppel corner. But we're not across the desert yet! We've still got to tackle the French Line... If hour long winch fests, vehicle breakdowns, and some of the most stunning desert sunsets you'll ever see don't float your boat, let's try adding a dumped camper trailer to the back of the Blitz! Will we make it to Mt Dare? Or will this adventure be a total BUST!
