The name of Merlin is forever linked in our minds to King Arthur. One without the other would be unthinkable. The king could not rule without his wizard - his chief counsellor - to guide and advise him. Yet until the twelfth century, they existed in folk-tales as separate, independent characters with no connection whatsoever.
