After he bemoans the fact that he has still not been blessed with a grandson, Jack is concerned to discover that son Roger has been diagnosed with a low sperm count.
Roger walks out of the family business when Jack fails to show faith in his management skills and refuses to make him a partner, with a little persuasion from Vicky, Roger sets up his own outfit and manages to successfully clinch a deal from under Jack's nose. Soon, the whole family becomes involved in the rivalry.
Vicky attends her doctors check up concerning her baby, the baby is fine, but as always the family have to interfere.
Jack kicks out Lisa's latest boyfriend, but she soon forgets him when she meets the young inspector in charge of investigating the burglary that takes place later that evening. Jack takes a liking to the new boyfriend but the rest of the family are equally enamoured by the seemingly perfect Ben, much to Roger's dismay.
Jack is elated when his daughter-in-law Vicky gives birth to a baby boy, but the new addition to the family causes turmoil for Maxine and Lisa.
The business appears to be in trouble when a couple learn that their new home has been built over a plague pit. Eager to keep bad publicity to a minimum, Roger convinces Jack to take on a low-cost housing project for nurses.
