One of the needs of any man in high political office is someone to organize social functions and serve as first lady. For Governor William Drinkwater, the chief executive of a small Midwestern state, and a widower, that some-one was his attractive 23-year-old daughter. Despite the problems caused by their generation gap, J.J. served her father as a charming and efficient first lady. Bright and opinionated, she was always willing to debate issues, and possessed the uncanny knack for getting her father into and out of political hot water.
