Året är 1956 och de engelska kodknäckarna Millie och Jean utreder kriminalfall i San Francisco tillsammans med sina amerikanska motparter Iris Bearden och Hailey Yarner.
Al centro della storia troviamo quattro protagoniste, Millie, Susan, Lucy e Jean, che andranno a comporre il Bletchley Circle. Mentre nella Seconda Guerra Mondiale apparentemente svolgevano lavori di segreteria, in realtà questo gruppo di ragazze faceva parte di un gruppo di decifratori militari in grado di aiutare gli alleati a vincere la guerra. Nove anni dopo questi eventi, le donne vengono "richiamate" nelle loro case, a una vita quotidiana che non si addice più alla loro persona. Se tutti riescono ad andare avanti con le loro vite, loro al contrario continuano a rimanere in uno stato di allerta, finché Susan non vedrà realmente uno schema nei rapporti di un serial killer britannico che rapisce e uccide giovani donne.
