Last year That's Life asked mothers-to-be if they would like to take part in a survey into what it's like having a baby in Britain today. The response was staggering and 6,000 carefully completed questionnaires were eventually received. The results provide a unique and revealing insight into our methods of care when babies are born, and what mothers feel about the system and those who operate it. Tonight we report the survey findings and tell the stories of many of the mothers who took part. We also reveal the most popular Christian the most names, the biggest baby, the smallest baby" the quickest labour, the oddest food fads and the most unusual stories.

There are 65,000 fires in the home every year, and over 11,000 people are injured. That's 30 people every day. And there are three times as many home fires as 30 years ago -even allowing for an increase in the number of homes, the number has risen. Why? In a special report to mark the beginning of its 21st series, That's Life! examines the causes of fire in the home and offers advice on devising an escape plan.
After 21 years of entertainment combined with campaigning consumer journalism, That's Life! comes to an end with this, its 418th edition. Esther Rantzen is joined for this nostalgic celebration by all the presenters featured over the years, along with Wet Wet Wet, whose 1988 version of With a Little Help from My Friends raised more than £100,000 for Childline, and Victoria Wood , who reflects on her regular appearances back in 1976. Remember Prince, the dog who loved "sausages"? Or the time Esther was arrested handing out bat stew on a London street? And That's Life's Jobsworth award (to petty-minded officialdom) has ensured the word an established place in the English language. Some of the campaigns have led to changes in the law and there are many stories of courage and hope - including the organ-transplant fund that started with 2-year-old Ben Hardwick in 1984. Ten years on his mother Debbie is in the studio to talk about Ben's life.
Viewers of That's Life! provided an amazing response to a special appeal on the programme about the run-down Komso Children's Hospital in St Petersburg. In April, more than 200 of them took time off work, paid their own fares and headed for Russia. Four 27-tonne lorries, packed with vital equipment and supplies, made a separate overland journey under Metropolitan Police escort, braving bandit country where hijacking is common, to rendezvous with the crew of volunteers. Even at the hospital itself, helpers were accosted by the Russian mafia and needed police protection. Presenter Howard Leader accompanied Ann Mackey, the dynamic personality behind the appeal, and her team for this special follow-up report. "We've saved dozens of children's lives," says Mrs Mackey, who packs her own suitcases with medicines and toys for the children. "The staff are skilled but they don't even have the basics, even painkillers."
