Az Ezeregyéjszaka meséiből jól ismert Szindbád gazdagon él gyönyörű palotájában és egy napon megvendégeli a szegény teherhordó Szindbádot. Szindbád elmeséli a kissé irigykedő név- és hasonmásának hét utazása történetét, melyeken Allah segítségével nagy nehézségeket kellett legyőznie. A szegény teherhordó a történet végén már nem irigykedik gazdag társára. Szindbád gazdagsága ellenére elégedetlen, álmában egy arcot lát maga előtt, és megmagyarázhatatlan vágyat érez, hogy megkeresse.
