On entering Sugar Free farm, former West End actress and mum-of-three Jennifer says: “I’ve really neglected myself, I don’t look after myself at all. Throughout the day I’m constantly grabbing a chocolate bar or a can of fizzy drink, hence why I’m so fat.” Reality star Arg adds: “This isn’t a diet we’re used to so it’s going to be tough.” Living in a farm worker’s cottage on Laverstoke Park Farm, set deep in the Hampshire countryside, over the course of the two weeks the celebrities’ roles are split and rotated with four of them working on the farm during the day and two tasked with preparing and cooking the sugar-free meals. On hand to keep the celebrities on the sugar-free wagon is nutritionist Angelique Panagos, who warns: “There’s not going to be one grain of sugar for the two weeks on the farm. They’ll be learning about what foods to eat so when they leave the farm they’ll have new tools.” With fruit and alcohol on the forbidden list, can life ever be sweet again for our six celebrity guinea pigs? As the workers get stuck into their new lives on the farm, where they are tasked with milking water buffalo, rounding up pigs and poultry and fertilizing the crops, amongst other duties, the dramas soon begin: Arg has an expensive accident, one of the group breaks down as they struggle to come to terms with the harsh realities of farm life and the celebrities’ bodies begin to react to a life without sugar, with varied results. And an afternoon in the vegetable garden sees medics called as Jennifer and Jane take a turn for the worse as the sugar-free detox takes hold, with Jennifer saying: "It’s just hit me like a train." Jane adds: “When I arrived here I was glowing…I’ve looked in the mirror today and that’s the first time I’ve thought, ‘I look old today.’” Arg sums up the situation: “We’ve got two weeks to go and there’s some broken people here already.”
Seven celebrities submit to a diet free from sugar, refined carbs, processed fats and cheap meat. From the moment they take up residence in a farmworkers' cottage, they're put to work to earn all the healthy food they eat. TV presenter Alison Hammond cooks from scratch with natural ingredients, comedian Joe Pasquale discovers an aptitude for pig husbandry, and ex MP Ann Widdecombe overcomes an aversion to whole grains. However, while Peter Davison, Stavros Flatley are also put through their paces, reality star Gemma Collins has trouble handling the farm work.
Four days into the latest challenge, irritability is rising as the effects of the new diet kick in. Comedian and novice cook Joe Pasquale is on unfamiliar territory in the kitchen, while reality star Gemma Collins continues her quest to find a farmer husband - this time in the chicken sheds. As they learn to appreciate the natural animal and dairy fats on the farm, the celebrities learn to make cheese and butter from scratch, and ex MP Ann Widdecombe discovers what really goes into the low fat spreads she eats every day.
As the dieting challenge continues, comedian Joe Pasquale finds the life and death decisions difficult, while TV presenter Alison Hammond and actor Peter Davison struggle to play god when it comes to the young buffalo. And as they begin to feel the benefits of sticking to the natural, healthy diet, Stavros Flatley Senior has a rude awakening about his belly, and Junior is confronted with the truth about his beloved breakfast sausage sandwiches.
The celebrities find out if they have lost any weight as the experiment concludes, but first, temptations still abound for Joe Pasquale and Peter Davison. Joe is let loose at the village fair, where he tries to resist his favourite sweet treats, while Peter has to avoid the delights of cupcakes. Gemma Collins finally gets a taste for farmwork and Alison Hammond is surprised to discover that her tastebuds have adjusted to the absence of sugar.
