Tommy Butler's home is to be demolished and he is moving in with his daughter. On the first day, he fights with his son in law, and his daughter won't let him do anything to help around the house. He decides to go live with his pal Wally. While he is waiting for the bus, he meets Colin, a young tearaway who asks a lot of questions about his stuffed parrot. Tommy gets to Wally's and finds there is no room for him, so he sneaks back into his daughters house before they know he is gone.

Tommy tells Charlie that he used to work on the railroad and takes him down to the train yards to show him around. When a driver goes home sick and the train can't continue, Charlie volunteers Tommy to drive it. Tommy forgot to mention that he used to work in the luggage department.
It's Charlie's 12th birthday and his mother thinks his guest is another 12 year old boy. When Tommy shows up, she is shocked. Charlie's father does not send him a present so Tommy makes up for it.
Charlie reads in the newspaper that "Mr X" has won the pools. Tommy tells him that he would like a female companion. Charlie tells the ice cream lady Daisy that Tommy is Mr. X . She goes after his money, and then other women follow.
Vera and Brian are going on vacation and Tommy has bought a new cardigan. Brian has to tell him he is not invited to go. Off they go and Tommy causes all kinds of chaos at home alone.
Brian finds out Harry has been drinking his whiskey and is furious. He confronts Harry and he threatens to leave for Sheffield (again). Brian finally calls him on it.
Charlie is growing up and is no longer interested in fishing, but Marilyn is the object of his affection now. Tommy helps him write a letter to her and Vera thinks it is for Mrs. Watson, the widow next door.
It's Father's Day and Charlie tells Tommy that he hasn't seen his father in seven years. Tommy takes him to find his dad, with a bad result.
Brian is forced to take Tommy to the pub where he alienates Brian's friends and offends the barmaid. Charlie and Tommy decide to be Knights of the road, but after begging for food and sleeping in a damp ditch, they rethink that decision.
Brian has the flu and gives Tommy £200 to deposit for him. Charlie and Tommy crash a wedding and a funeral to get free meals so they don't have to go home after losing Brian's money.
Vera thinks her dad should have friends his own age and tells him that people are making comments about his relationship with Charlie. He even gets stopped by a policeman who asks the nature of the friendship. Tommy decides not to see Charlie anymore.
Betty pays Charlie 25p to wash the floor and he hires a scout who will do it for 5p. Brian is promoted and they will have to move to Coventry. Charlie tries to talk his mother into moving. Ron offers to buy the house.
Charlie joins the Rebels gang. Vera and Brian try to get her dad to join the over 60's club. Charlie runs away from home and the Rebels confront Tommy.
Tommy needs money so he sets up a car wash business. When Brian tries to help them put a part back on the car, he gets nicked for stealing parts.
While Vera and Brian are away for a few days, they book Tommy into a home. He overhears them and thinks it is permanent. He goes to his friends to ask if he can stay there, and finds he has just died. Then he learns that the home is temporary.
Tommy goes to the doctor for a physical, when he is told he needs a chest x-ray, his hypochondria kicks in and he decides to quit smoking.
Charlie is invited to try out for the local football club. He has to decline because he doesn't have £20 to buy new boots. Tommy pawns something very dear to him to get the money for him.
A nice picnic in the woods turns into a nightmare when Tommy and Charlie get hopelessly lost. Betty, Vera and Brian are up all night worrying.
Brian sets up Emily Armitage with Tommy in the hope of marrying him off. Tommy contacts Ethel, an old flame. When she shows up in a Rolls and a chauffeur, he proposes to her. Charlie has a stalker called Specky Sonia that he can't avoid.
Tommy takes Charlie to France to visit his father's grave from WWI. Along the way there are a few mishaps like dropping the passports in the English Channel.
Tommy and Charlie see the milkman go into Vera's house. They assume she is having an affair and Charlie tells his mum, she tells a friend, and so on, until the whole area knows.
Charlie tries to order a beer and chat up two ladies at the pub. Dave wants to get back with Betty and be a proper dad for Charlie. Tommy wants to be a grandfather and keeps the pressure on Vera and Brian to have a family.
The boys decide to start a business of buying and selling. They make so many mistakes, often selling the items for less than they paid. They end up bankrupt and Charlie will have to look for a full time job.
It's Tommys 72nd birthday and he thinks everyone forgot, until all kinds of people drop by to wish him well. He decides to buy a used suit for himself, but loses the money. Charlie finds it and returns it and Tommy buys his suit.
The series finale. Charlie can't find a job and his mum decides they will emigrate to Australia. When she tells him they are leaving, Charlie runs away from home. The Salvation Army notify the police that a boy under 18 has turned up, and Tommy brings him back.
