This animated series was produced by DePatie-Freleng Enterprises, with the character of Spider-Woman being specifically created in order for Marvel Comics to have a female counterpart to Spider-Man before any other comics company thought of the idea. For the TV show, only Spider-Woman's real name and powers were kept intact from the comicbook. Everything else about the show's setup was created specifically for the television series. Her origin for the TV show was that as a child she was bitten by a poisonous spider. Her father, Dr. Alexander Drew saved her life by using an untested spider serum that inadvertently gave her spider powers. And now, with Jessica as the head of Justice Magazine, she battles evil as Spider-Woman, with the help of photographer Jeff Hunt, and her nephew Billy Drew. Spider-Man also guest stars in two episodes of the series.

Alors qu'elle n'était encore qu'une enfant, la jeune Jessica Drew fut agressée et mordue par une araignée venimeuse, gardée dans le laboratoire de son père, un savant de renom. Pour venir en aide à sa fille, le professeur Drew lui innocula son "sérum d'araignée" et parvint de justesse à lui sauver la vie... mais depuis ce jour, Jessica dispose d'étonnantes capacités physiques et mentales, comme si l'araignée lui avait transmis ses aptitudes !

La piccola Jessica venne cresciuta, dal 1930, nelle montagne di Wundagore, sita nella piccola nazione balcanica della Transia, dal padre Jonathon, dalla madre Merriem e dal genetista Herbert Edgar Wyndham (in seguito Alto Evoluzionario). Wyndham, scienziato visionario ed abilissimo manipolato a sua insaputa da personaggi come Sinistro, si mise in partnership con Jonathon Drew (la cui moglie aveva ereditato quelle colline, dove venne scoperto l'uranio) per fondare la "cittadella della scienza" e continuare i propri esperimenti. Le radiazioni derivanti dall'uranio portarono, nel giro di un anno, Jessica in fin di vita. Il padre disperato le iniettò un siero sperimentale basato sul sangue di un ragno radioattivo, apparentemente senza risultati quindi, grazie alle capacità di Wyndham, venne posta in un acceleratore genetico, dove l'invecchiamento e la degenerazione erano molto più lenti. Nel giro di pochi mesi, Jonathon perse anche la moglie e, distrutto, lasciò Wundagore per l'America, lasciando Jessica nelle mani di Wyndham e della Bova.

Siendo pequeña, Jessica fue picada por una venenosa araña. Su padre, en un intento de salvar su vida, le inyectó un suero aún no probado, que no sólo la salvó, sino que transfirió algunas de las habilidades de la araña a la pequeña, conviertiéndola así en una joven con extraordinarios poderes y fuerza.

Jessica Drew foi mordida por uma aranha venenosa. Forçado a experimentar um soro de aranha não testado, o pai de Jessica, salva-lhe a vida mas, sem saber, dá-lhe poderes incríveis iguais aos das aranhas. Decidida a combater o mal com a sua teia de justiça, Jessica torna-se a Mulher Aranha com poderes incríveis como uma força super humana podendo erguer ate 10 toneladas e habilidade com teias semelhante ao homem aranha, podendo emitir teias fortíssimas pelos punhos. Com o corpo gerado por bioeletricidade lhe foi conferido suporte a venenos, factor de cura e imunidade a radiação. Jessica pode escalar paredes e ainda adquiriu um sentido de aranha que lhe informa quando o perigo se aproxima. Desde então ela divide o tempo entre ser a editora da revista Justice e a super-heroína Mulher-Aranha
