Soon after moving into their downtown loft, Davina feels strangely dissatisfied. She can’t bring herself to unpack and is only able to buy a single piece of uncomfortable furniture. Al struggles with their son Orlando’s despair and the gritty reality of their new neighbourhood.
When Davina bumps into a high school friend on the street, she is reminded of the life she could have had with an old flame. Al is reunited with a former girlfriend, now take-no-prisoners Radio Journalist, Sarah Thorne. While he tries to assert himself on Sarah’s radio show, Davina visits her comatose mother and has a disturbing encounter with an otherworld old lady.
Davina meets Robert Ringwald, a handsome and successful columnist, and the person Al longs to be. While he attempts to seduce Davina, Ringwald keeps Al busy by making him a jury member on a book prize. Davina is tempted by this wealthy sophisticated man of the world, but at the last moment it is Dr. Cass who makes her see that Robert Ringwald is just as human and fearful as Al.
Al has a run in with a violent woman driver and the Jag is damaged. Al and Davina join Roger and Veronica on a birthday road trip, but after Roger’s disparaging rant about the arts, Davina takes back her Christmas gift of piano lessons and gives them to Al. While Al struggles with the dull exercises, Greg the piano teacher reveals to Davina his passion for archeology and older women. They have a brief tryst at the museum, but guilt compels Davina to confess her discretion to Al. Al is furious but soon discovers the motivation behind Greg’s philandering.
Davina takes on the burden of planning her mother’s funeral and Veronica refuses to help. Al takes it upon himself to brighten Davina’s life by painting the loft, but his efforts have the opposite effect. Roger appears to be coming on to Davina at the art gallery and later at the visitation. She tells him to stay away, but at a post-visitation family gathering the truth comes out about Roger’s crisis. With the help of medical marijuana, Al let’s Davina know what he thinks about her recent improprieties.
Al gets some disturbing news from Dr. Cass. It gets worse when he discovers that his car has been broken into, and that Davina is having an affair with Greg. Davina leaves Al and moves in with her in-laws, much to the chagrin of Veronica. Roger has a spectacular art opening, Davina has a complex delusion that seems to support her decision to change her life, and Al has a near fatal heart attack. In the end, Davina regrets her choice, but is it too late?
Davina is unable to move on while living in the ultra-hip condo. She is haunted by memories of Al and their life together. She accepts an offer to bunk with Veronica and Roger, but that arrangement proves a little more complicated than expected. Meanwhile, Theodore puts his real estate license to good use and tries to help Davina find a new home. But moving isn't as easy as she'd hoped; partly because Al's spirit seems to be telling her to live near the lake. Once the condo is sold, a major faux pas by Roger forces Davina out of her sister's house and she finds herself homeless. Eventually Sam comes to the rescue, offering Davina an unexpected sanctuary.
Davina is slowly adjusting to island life when she has a surprising encounter with an old friend whose wife happens to be infamous radio host Sarah Thorn. Davina accepts Sarah's offer to attend her �voice' workshop, which turns out to be a woman's retreat for the disenfranchised. Meanwhile Davina is frustrated by her inability to figure out Al's computer password and when she discovers that Al and Sarah had a history, she wonders if she ever really knew him at all. Her frustration grows. When the workshop concludes and she finally finds her voice, she uses it to tell Sarah off. Finally, Davina has an epiphany and is able to crack Al's password. When she does, she discovers a letter that proves that her doubts about him were unfounded.
Davina needs to get rid of Al's clothes now that she's settled onto the houseboat, but she can't bring herself to just give them all away. She tries to fob items off on Sam and Theo, and, when that doesn't work, tries wearing them herself. Her unconventional look catches the eye of David, a charming personal shopper. There's an immediate spark, and their afternoon together turns into a heady whirlwind romance which might just prove too good to be true.
Davina is thrilled when Orlando makes contact after an absence of several months. She is even more delighted that he has changed from a neurotic, pouting child into a happy, grounded adult. Not only has he become a fervent Christian, but he's in love with Cheryl; the woman who "saved" him. Impulsively, Davina invites Orlando and Cheryl to stay at the houseboat, but soon discovers that Cheryl is not exactly the angel that Orlando described. Davina turns to Sam for solace, and a little something more, which causes her vivid memories of Al to evolve dramatically.
When Orlando surprises Davina with the news that he is getting married to Cheryl, Davina tries to patch things up with her, despite Imaginary Al's objections. Meanwhile, Roger unknowingly hires Veronica's ex-lover Lenny Gordon to represent him at his fraud trial, with painful consequences for all of them. And, after repeated efforts, Davina finally finds the courage to say goodbye to Al.
Davina suffers another loss and faces unresolved issues about Al when a Brazilian stranger enters her life.
