Das Leben der Dashwood-Schwestern Elinor und Marianne gerät nach dem Tod ihres Vaters ziemlich aus der Bahn. Ihr Stiefbruder John ist der Alleinerbe, und gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Fanny vertreibt er die beiden Mädchen aus Norland, dem angestammten Familiensitz. Mit ihrer Mutter Mrs. Dashwood ziehen sie nun in ein kleines Cottage nach Devonshire. Vor der Abreise lernen sie allerdings noch Edward Ferras kennen, den Bruder ihrer herzlosen Schwägerin. Besonders für Elinor ist diese Begegnung von besonderer Bedeutung und sie denkt noch lange an den höflichen und liebenswerten jungen Mann zurück. In Devonshire machen die Dashwoods schon bald die Bekanntschaft von Colonel Brando. Er ist ganz hingerissen von der impulsiven Marianne. Doch die vergnügt sich lieber mit dem Lebemann John Willoughby, der sie allerdings kurze Zeit später wortlos zurücklässt. Inzwischen hat Elinor auch erfahren, dass der vermeintlich so schüchterne Ferrars in Wirklichkeit bereits verlobt ist.
