SNL arrived in earnest in Season Two, solidifying a sketch comedy/variety format that has remained largely unchanged up to the present day. Chevy Chase, the breakout star of Season One, left the cast after the sixth episode of this season in hopes of a career in Hollywood. His replacement, Bill Murray, was slow to catch on with viewers. But, after an on-air plea for his job, he retained his spot on the cast and stayed until the mass exodus after Season Five.
