Ash und seine Freunde treffen auf Efram und sein Pflanzen-Pokemon Hubelupf. Von ihm erfährt Ash, dass ein Pflanzen-Pokémon-Turnier stattfindet, an dem Efram unbedingt teilnehmen will. Sich seines Sieges ganz sicher macht auch Ash mit. Er hält das ganze Turnier für ein Kinderspiel und ist der Überzeugung, dass er gar nicht verlieren kann. Doch da taucht plötzlich Team Rocket auf. Sie haben sich verkleidet und Mauzi als Pflanzen-Pokémon getarnt. Natürlich fliegt der Schwindel auf und Team Rocket geht mal wieder in die Luft. Danach gewinnen Ash und Afram alle ihre Matches, bis sie schließlich im Finale aufeinandertreffen.
En route to Ekruteak, Ash and company are caught by the sight of a Skiploom racing by. Following after it, they encounter its trainer, Ephram. He and his Skiploom are training for the upcoming annual Grass-Type tournament, a contest for Grass Pokémon only. Confident he can win any "local" tournament, Ash decides he and Bulbasaur will enter as well. Ephram and his Skiploom train hard as the tournament quickly approaches.
