If you're interested in doing more reading, a bunch of very smart people have tackled this topic. Just a couple of my favorites are: - Immanuel Kant, The Critique of Pure Reason - Martin Heidegger, Being and Time - Jean-Paul Sartre, Being and Nothingness - Ludwig Wittgenstein, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (less "self" and more "existence")
