Ronnie is desperate to get out of Bramley and as far away from his domineering mother as possible. First he needs a new job - preferably in London.
When Ronnie discovers he somehow still has a job, he explodes at Colonel Sutcliffe - but standing up for himself pays off, and he's offered a higher wage! At last he can get a flat of his own: but finding female company is more difficult.
The flat is still not up to scratch, and Ronnie eventually agrees to move in to Keith and Sally's spare room. But what if he wanted to bring a girl back?
Ronnie hopes to befriend the son of the managing director of the next firm he's got an interview with, but his attempt to fit in at a wine bar runs quickly aground.
With his presence - and specifically, his mother's - starting to cause conflict between Keith and Sally, Ronnie arranges a date with Laura, who works at the local library.
After a disastrous holiday, Laura's walked out from her parents' and needs somewhere to stay.
Ronnie attempts to pluck up the courage to propose to Laura, which rather upsets Sally. There's also a possible promotion in the offing.
Now happily married and living in their own home, Ronnie and Laura are plagued by a long visit from his mother and her badgering for a grandchild. In an effort to make her stay less comfortable, Ronnie and Laura decide to invite a few guests that they know she doesn't approve of.
Ronnie has taken a challenge to tell the truth for 24 hours and feels the task is going to be rather easy. However, there's a newcomer in the office and they are certainly an unknown quantity.
When Sutcliffe is not getting on with his wife it is probably not a good idea to get in between them, but Ronnie tries to be ever helpful and makes matters worse.

When holiday time comes around again, Ronnie and Laura have said no to package holidays. The plan this year is to go camping - with all that entails.
Ronnie has a crisis of marital confidence after being interrupted in a row with Laura by their neighbour Cyril, before seeing new colleague at the office, Neil, chasing all of the girls around and having quite a riot.
Ronnie is up for a promotion - to become an area manager, based in Wick, north Scotland. The interviewers want to meet Laura, too...
