Die Schülerin Hiyori rettet einen Fremden vor einem Busunfall und wird dabei getötet. Sie landet in einer Zwischenwelt und erfährt, dass der Fremde der Gott Yato ist.
A god named Yato answers a five-yen prayer to defeat a phantom that has appeared above a school using his Regalia, Tomone. Shortly after the battle, however, Tomone decides she is fed up with Yato and requests to have his contract with him terminated. Now without a Regalia, Yato takes up a new request to find a missing cat named Milord. Whilst he is doing that, a girl named Hiyori Iki spots him walking into the path of an oncoming bus and dives into to save him. She pushes him out of the road but is hit by the bus herself, and afterwards finds her spirit separated from her body, although she is able to return to it safely. Whilst recovering in hospital, Hiyori hears strange voices before having another encounter with Yato, who formerly introduces himself as a god. Some time later, Yato finds Milord but is attacked by the phantom. After Hiyori helps Yato escape, she learns that the incident from before has resulted in her becoming a half-phantom lying between the worlds of the living and the dead, causing her spirit, which has a cat's tail, to sometimes leave her body. After learning of the situation, Hiyori gives Yato five yen as a fee in order to help her get back to normal.
Yato, dieu errant oublié par les humains, se retrouve dans une mauvaise passe quand sa shinki, Tomone, décide de démissionner. Désarmé, il se consacre donc à des missions sans danger, comme retrouver un chat perdu. Seulement, alors qu'il poursuit l'animal en fuite, une collégienne lui sauve la vie en se jetant devant un bus qu'il n'avait pas vu.
Per salvare uno sconosciuto da un pullman che sta per investirlo, la studentessa Hiyori muore e cade in un limbo dove scopre che l'uomo è un dio di nome Yato.

Ято отзывается на молитву школьницы, и в результате его отвергает собственное священное орудие Томонэ. Высказав напоследок ряд претензий к бывшему хозяину, девушка уходит. Ято же приходится смириться и начать искать более подходящий заработок. Им становится розыск домашних животных. За этим занятием его застает 15-летняя школьница Ики Хиёри.
Yato responde a una pena la oración cinco yenes para derrotar a un fantasma de la serpiente, usando su Regalia, un arma divina, llamada Tomone. Sin embargo, Tomone termina su contrato con Yato debido a su estado empobrecido. Cuando Hiyori Iki ahorra Yato de ser atropellado por un autobús, se lesiona y brevemente tiene una experiencia fuera del cuerpo .
夜斗是個為了5元的香火錢，連跑腿送貨的委託都能接受的無家可歸的流浪神。身為他的“神器”的同伴伴音對他“生理上就排斥”，而伴音隨後也向夜斗提出辭職，不再擔當他的神器。
於是某一天，沒了神器的夜斗接了個尋找走失的小貓的委託。在尋找走失的小貓的途中，差點被卡車撞到的夜斗，被一位名叫壹岐日和的少女所救。
Yato é um deus vadio, um desempregado que luta contra Phantoms e resolve os problemas humanos por apenas cinco ienes. Mas ele não sabe que a busca por um gato desaparecido está prestes a levá-lo a um encontro fatídico...
Morta ao salvar um estranho de ser atropelado por um autocarro, a jovem Hiyori fica presa no limbo, onde descobre que o estranho que salvou era o deus Yato.
