Pilot season is pure mayhem. Dozens and dozens of pilots get made for millions and millions of dollars and only a fraction ever see a national audience. Of those, an even smaller fraction survive one season (or half a season). This is partly down to derivative, exploitative, and opportunistic show concepts, or else bad execution. But it's also down to what timeslot you get as a new show. There are plenty of great shows (Journeyman!!) that fail because they were tucked away in slow hours. And there are a plenty of great shows that never see air because executives decided before an audience could. Here's 2013's freshmen crop. See any survivors?
