Né dans une famille catholique très pratiquante mais également attachée aux valeurs traditionnelles de l'Allemagne, Heinrich Himmler supporte très mal la défaite allemande de 1918. Tôt rallié au national-socialisme, il participa au putsch manqué de Munich, en 1923, et entra peu après dans les SS, dont il prit la tête, sur nomination d'Hitler, en 1929. Son ascension fut extrêmement rapide.
