The first MTV Europe Music Awards were held on November 24, 1994 at Brandenburg Gate, Berlin, Germany, five years after the removal of the Berlin Wall. Hosted by Tom Jones, the show featured performances by Aerosmith, Björk, Roxette, Take That and George Michael. The MTV Europe Music Awards 2009 took place in Berlin, Germany at the O2 World and in front of the Brandenburg Gate. The award show was presented by Katy Perry. Nominations were officially announced on September 21, 2009. This is the fourth time that the MTV Europe Music Awards were hosted in Germany. Nominations for the regional awards were announced on 1 September 2009. Pete Wentz was the host for the 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards webcast, featuring backstage gossip, interviews and much more. Though the awards are seen as Europe's premiere music event few European artists have received nominations in key categories. The majority of nominations are American artists, some European countries which dominate in key categories include the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, France and Germany. With receiving three awards, Beyoncé Knowles was the big winner of the evening. One especialness was the free concert of U2 in front of the Brandenburg Gate.
The event was hosted by Eva Longoria Parker — who had 13 outfit changes, one of which was shaped like a huge Spanish ham — and introduced the crowd to a gang of hunks, pretending they were family. The actress joked, "I recently did some research into my ancestry and it turns out I'm 70 per cent Spanish! I tracked down some of my relatives in Madrid (and) I promised that I'd bring them out on stage. A big welcome to the Longorias!". During her acceptance speech for Best New Act, Ke$ha directly addressed her fans, saying: "Hopefully I can inspire you to give your finger to the cynics and fucking be yourself!".[
