Otec Monkovy zemřelé ženy Trudy, Dwight Ellison, se nečekaně objeví v San Francisku a požádá Adriana, aby s ním jel do Los Angeles. Produkuje tam televizní vědomostní soutěž a má podezření, že moderátor s jedním ze soutěžících podvádějí, aby získali výhru. Monk mu vyhoví a ve studiu při přímém přenosu moderátora i soutěžícího usvědčí nejen z podvodů, ale i z vraždy.

Völlig überraschend bekommt Monk Besuch von Trudys Vater Dwight, der ihn bittet, mit nach Los Angeles zu kommen, da er ein großes Problem hat. Dwight ist Produzent einer sehr erfolgreichen Game Show, die ihm in letzter Zeit aber nur wenig Freude bereitet. Ein Kandidat namens Val Birch gewinnt seit Wochen Unsummen, obwohl die Fragen teilweise äußerst schwierig sind und Val Birch alles andere als eine Geistesgröße ist. Dwight hat zwar den Verdacht, dass es in der Show nicht mit rechten Dingen zugeht, beweisen konnte er den Betrug bislang nicht. Und wer könnte so etwas besser aufklären als sein Schwiegersohn Adrian Monk? Nach anfänglichem Zögern erklärt sich Monk dann auch bereit, mit Dwight nach Hollywood zu fahren. In der für Monk wenig erbaulichen Atmosphäre eines Fernsehstudios findet allerdings auch er zunächst keine Anzeichen für eine Mogelei seitens Val Birch oder des Quizmasters Lankman. Doch als Monk notgedrungen beschließt, sich die Sache aus unmittelbarer Nähe anzusehen und als Kandidat an der Show teilzunehmen, erkennt er bald, dass Val Birch und Lankman tatsächlich einen faulen Trick benutzen. Und nicht nur das: Monk findet zusätzlich heraus, dass der berühmte Quizmaster Roddy Lankman sogar ein Mörder ist...

With Sharona in New Jersey to visit her ailing mother, Monk is left in the very incompetent hands of his annoying upstairs neighbor, Kevin Dorfman, but the prospect of a week with Kevin is eased somewhat by a visit from Trudy's father, Dwight Ellison. Dwight invites Monk (and Kevin) to spend the week with him and his wife, Marcia – and at the same time investigate gameshow host Roddy Lankman, who appears to be involved in a conspiracy to allow one of his contestants, Val Birch, to win every game. Despite the memories of Trudy aroused by spending time with her parents in her former home and the questionable help of Kevin, Monk discovers evidence that Lankman visited Birch's house – and that Birch visited the site of the accident that killed Lankman's assistant, Lizzie Talvo.
