In this episode of Awful Archaeology I discuss the skeleton of the Oldoway Man; a mysterious homo sapien unearthed in the Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. This find baffled archaeologists like Hans Reck and Louis Leaky due to it being found in a middle Pleistocene bed. Since its deposition should have indicated the find was around a million years old, both archaeologists worked tirelessly to figure out what this mostly modern human was doing in such an ancient deposit.
In this episode of Awful Archaeology I discuss the Orontius Finaeus Map. Created in the early 1500s, this map outlines much of the known world and covers the planet from pole to pole. However the south pole has been the subject of debate since the maps rediscovery by Charles Hapgood. According to conspiracy theorists the map shows the the outline of an ice free Antarctica. In their eyes, this proves that Antarctica had been known about and mapped for far longer than we have been told as well as debunking anthropogenic climate change. I hope you enjoy my breaking down of this awful conspiracy and those who perpetuate it
In this episode of awful archaeology I discuss the Grave Creek Stone. This mysterious artifact was found in the Grave Creek Mound during an archaeological excavation in West Virginia in the 1800's. Bearing what appears to be an unknown language, this artifact has been the topic of controversy for nearly 200 years. Join me as I explore every facet of this mysterious artifact.
In this video I discuss three different instances of creationist footprint conspiracies. Each one is an example of an out of place artifact (OOPA) that "prove" that humankind walked the earth for hundreds of millions of years and at times even suggest that we coexisted with dinosaurs. Join me in seeing how these conspiracies misinterpret the fossil record, create their own evidence and crumble under their own weight.
In this video we go down the rabbit hole of the conspiracies surrounding the Dendera Light motif at the temple of Hathor at Dendera. From ancient aliens to Norwegian electricians this story is a roller coaster. Join me for the ride as I debunk it all.
In this episode of Awful Archaeology we discuss the mysterious discovery known as The Baghdad Battery. This artifact was unearthed from the ancient city of Al-Madain and has been identified by conspiracy theorists and scientists alike as the remains of an ancient battery. Join me as we unravel the mystery surrounding this ancient piece of history as we uncover what it was, what it wasn't and what it could have been.
In this video we dive down the rabbit hole of the Gosford Glyphs. Located on a canyon wall in the Brisbane Water National Park in Australia, these carvings have been used by some to support the theory that a group of ancient Egyptians sailed to Australia some 5000 years ago. We are going to unpack this claim for ourselves. Try to determine what the glyphs mean, figure out who made them, and even watch a little bit of everyones favorite show: Ancient Aliens.
In this video we dive down the rabbit hole of the Nebraska Man. An ancient "set" of human remain(s) discovered in the late 1910s by a man named Harold Cook. Cook was convinced that the artifact that he had found was evidence of a lost species of great ape, and potentially a human ancestor, native to North America. Join me as we explore the splash that this discovery caused and explore how science can sometimes be just as dogmatic as the world of pseudoscience
