The first episode introduces Wilkins Micawber, an impoverished man suffering a run of bad fortune and constantly struggling to provide for his wife and four children, yet a kind-hearted fellow who dresses and speaks like a gentleman and is always looking on the bright side of life, even when a ruthless money-lender sends a violent ex-convict demanding money with menaces. Eventually the family earn a spot of money by taking in a dramatist as their lodger, prompting Micawber to tell his house guest all about his early life - leading to a series of flashbacks that reveal how and why he came to be in such a woeful position. Co-starring Annabelle Apsion as Micawber's long-suffering wife Emma, with Mark Benton, Jamie Foreman and Adrian Hood.
Life is looking up for eternal optimist Micawber - his lodger's rent has enabled him to pay off most of his debts, little orphan Alice is settling in with the family and Babbitt has got him a job as stage manager on his latest theatrical production. However, there is still one cloud on the financial horizon, namely money-lender Ezra, who once more dispatches his dim-witted henchman Ismail in an effort to recover his money. But when the thug confronts our hero, no one could predict the surprise outcome of their showdown. David Jason stars in part two of John Sullivan's light-hearted drama series based on the character created by Charles Dickens, with Annabelle Apsion, Mark Benton, Jamie Foreman and Adrian Hood.
The impoverished gent is arrested for his debts and prosecuted in court by his own brother-in-law, as a result of which he gets thrown into prison. But just when it seems things cannot get any worse, his debts are paid off by a grateful former client who employs him to entertain two American businessmen on the London leg of their European tour. In typical fashion, Micawber throws himself into the task and draws up an itinerary of museums and theatre - but he soon discovers the duo are more interested in dens of vice. David Jason stars in the Dickens-inspired drama, with Annabelle Apsion, Milton Johns and Sam Kelly.
The family's fortunes look up once more when Micawber gets a job as butler to an eccentric aristocratic couple. However, it soon becomes clear her ladyship has taken quite a shine to her new manservant, and for a while he is flattered by her attentions - until he realises his lordship has a tendency to gun down in cold blood anyone dallying with his wife. David Jason stars in the final episode of the Dickens-inspired drama, with Annabelle Apsion, Jan Francis, Michael Cochrane and Michael Troughton.
