Sono passati sette anni e Lorenzo spera di chiudere i conti con il Papa ottenendo la firma di un trattato di pace tra i vari regnanti italia-ni. Riario attacca la città di Ferrara, alleata di Firenze, sperando di far saltare il trattato e di indurre Lorenzo a tornare alla guerra aper-ta. Mentre il Magnifico affronta questa nuova crisi diplomatica, sua madre Lucrezia, che sa di avere poco da vivere, coinvolge Clarice nel-la gestione della banca, rivelandole anche gli imbrogli che ha dovuto attuare per garantire adeguati finanziamenti alla politica e al me-cenatismo di Lorenzo. Logorato dal continuo scontro con Sisto IV, Lorenzo decide di av-viare suo figlio Giovanni alla carriera eccle-siastica sperando di aumentare l’influenza dei Medici nella Curia romana. La pace di Bagno-lo, siglata da tutti i principi italiani, segna il trionfo della famiglia Medici e di Lorenzo, di-venuto “l’ago della bilancia” della politica ita-liana.
