Developed from Japanium ore is the super energy, Photon Power. Seeking this energy is Dr. Hell, a madman craving world domination who along with his subordinates Baron Ashura and Count Brocken, commands the Machine Beasts excavated from Bardos Island (believed to be Rhodes) to attack the Photon Power Lab and take it for himself. Meeting the attack head on is our hero, the hot-blooded teenager Kouji Kabuto who pilots the super robot Mazinger Z, constructed by his grandfather Juzo and made from the strongest metal Chogokin Z. But in this battle between Dr. Hell and the Kabuto family, many legends surrounding the Mycenaean Civilization and Bardos Island, as well as the secrets of Mazinger Z remain shrouded in mystery.

Les ressources naturelles de la Terre s'épuisent de manière irréversible et la survie de l'espèce humaine est menacée. Par chance, un minerai rare est découvert : le Japonium. Le grand savant Jûzô Kabuto parvient à en tirer une énergie alternative, « la photo-énergie », qui pourrait être en mesure de sauver la planète et ses habitants. Mais c'est sans compter sur le maléfique Dr. Hell, qui cherche à s'emparer du précieux minerai pour dominer le monde grâce à une armée de colosses mécaniques très sophistiqués ! Heureusement, la riposte est prête : robot contre robot ! Jûzô a anticipé la menace en élaborant dans le plus grand secret le robot géant Mazinger Z. Et ce n'est autre que son propre petit-fils, Kôji, qui va se retrouver aux commandes de ce fantastique monstre de technologie !
La super energia che si sprigiona dal minerale Japanium, la fotopotenza. Mirando alla fotopotenza, il Dottor Hell, che mira alla conquista del mondo, attacca L’Istituto di Ricerca sulla Fotopotenza. Il protagonista, Koji Kabuto, lo combatte pilotando Mazinger Z , il robot costruito da suo nonno Juzo. I servitori di Hell, si pongono ripetutamente di fronte a Koji manovrando le bestie meccaniche, i Kikaiju, rinvenuti tra le rovine dell’isola di Bardos. Koji si butta a capofitto nella lotta con Mazinger Z, che è stato costruito con la piu forte delle leghe metalliche, la Super Lega Z. Ma nel mezzo di questa guerra si celano le ragioni dell’antico rancore tra la famiglia Kabuto e il Dott. Hell, i misteri dell’isola di Bardos e della civiltà dei Micenei, il segreto di Mazinger Z e molte altre cose ancora.

저패니움 광석에서 채취할 수 있는 수퍼 에너지 광자력. 그 광자력을 노리고 세계 정복을 꾀하는 닥터 헬이 카부토 박사가 관리하는 광자력 연구소를 습격해 온다. 주인공 카부토 코지는 할아버지 카부토 쥬조가 만든 수퍼로봇 마징가 Z를 타고 싸우게 된다. 닥터 헬은 부하인 아수라 남작, 브로켄 백작과 함께 바도스 섬에서 발굴된 기계 괴물인 기계수를 타고 코지의 앞을 가로막는다.
사실 이 싸움의 이면에는 카부토 일족과 닥터 헬 간의 깊은 악연, 미케네 문명과 바도스 섬의 수수께끼를 비롯하여 마징가 Z의 비밀 등 수많은 수수께끼들이 복잡하게 얽혀 있었는데...
이제는 마치 전설처럼 느껴질 정도인 슈퍼로봇 애니메이션의 시조 '마징가 Z'. 슈퍼로봇 애니메이션이라는 장르를 개척함과 동시에 확립했다고 말할 수 있는 이 작품이, 최근의 리메이크붐을 타고 2009년 4월을 맞이해 '진 마징가 충격! Z편'이라는 타이틀을 달고 시청자들을 찾아온다. '게게게의 키타로'나 '얏타맨' 등 과거 인기작들의 리메이크가 좋은 반응을 얻으면서, 구작의 설정을 고스란히 가져오면서도 시대의 흐름에 맞게 연출과 캐릭터디자인에 세련됨을 더하여 변화를 주는 기법들이 점차 늘어나고 있는데, 이번의 '진 마징가' 역시 이같은 범주에 들어가는 작품이라 할 수 있다.
