Magnum möchte in diesem Jahr den 4. Juli in aller Ruhe verbringen. Und damit er auch wirklich allein bleibt, paddelt er mit seinem Kajak zu einer abgelegenen Insel. Doch ein Motorboot rammt ihn, und der Privatdetektiv kentert. Verloren treibt er mitten auf dem Meer.
It's the 4th of July, and Higgins is playing in a polo match, T.C. is taking his baseball team to a professional game, Rick is out with his latest girlfriend on the King Kamehameha II yacht, and Thomas is observing his annual Independence Day tradition of a solitary day at sea -- until his surf ski is capsized in the wake of a recklessly driven speedboat and set adrift. Carried off further and further away from land by the powerful Molokai Channel, Thomas relies on childhood memories of his father's training him to tread water to keep himself afloat as he struggles desperately to stay above water and fend off a menacing shark. As the hours pass, Higgins, T.C. and Rick each have a sixth sense that Thomas is in trouble, and they team up to rescue him. Thomas approaches the twenty-four hour mark in the water recalling his wedding to Michelle and his father's burial -- on July 4, 1951 -- as Higgins scoops him out of the ocean, with T.C. in his helicopter overhead and Rick on the yacht nearby.
Parti faire du surf en solitaire, Magnum est pris dans un courant qui l'entraîne au large. A bout de forces, il se remémore quelques instants de son enfance...
E' il Quattro Luglio e mentre tutti si preparano a festeggiare, Thomas mette in pratica lo stesso rituale che di ogni anno fin dal 1951, giorno in cui ha sepolto suo padre. Magnum trascorre la giornata in solitudine, in mare, per commemorare il ricordo di suo padre, ma quest'anno il suo surf viene colto da una corrente anomala e portato al largo. Mentre si rifugia nei ricordi della sua infanzia per rimanere a galla e combattere la paura (uno squalo gli si avvicina pericolosamente ) Higgins, Rick e T.C. hanno la sensazione che ci sia qualcosa che non va e che il loro amico sia in pericolo..
Es el 4 de julio, Higgins está jugando un partido de polo, T.C. lleva a su equipo de béisbol a un partido profesional, Rick sale con su última novia en el yate King Kamehameha II y Thomas hace su tradición anual del Día de la Independencia de un día solitario en el mar, hasta que su esquí de surf vuelca por la estela de una lancha motora conducida imprudentemente y queda a la deriva.
