Die Leiche von Jane Hunt alias Rock-Ikone Patty Voytek, Sängerin der Rock-Band 'Krisis', taucht in der Müllverwertung auf. Pattys Handy-Daten führen Briscoe und Green zu dem pensionierten Detective Mike Foster, der mit Büchern über unaufgeklärte Mordfälle große Erfolge feiert. Sein neuester Fall ist der angebliche Selbstmord von Pattys Freund Shane Mallory - Bandleader von Krisis, bis er sich angeblich im Drogenrausch von einem Dach gestürzt hat. Foster glaubt, dass Patty von Travis Jones ermordet wurde, weil sie ihn vor Jahren verlassen und aus der Band gedrängt hatte. McCoy bleibt die schwierige Aufgabe, die Waffe nachträglich in die Beweiskette einzufügen und es gelingt ihm, nachzuweisen, dass Travis seine ehemalige Freundin umbrachte, nachdem sie herausgefunden hatte, dass er Shane Mallory vom Dach gestürzt hatte.

The prosecuters are hampered by the actions of a retired detective, who worked a case with Briscoe several years back, turned writer whose unconventional research tactics makes him a suspect as well.

Briscoe e Green indagano sull'omicidio di una cantante rock, vedova di un frontman di una famosa rockband, che morì suicida qualche anno prima. I detective scoprono che un ex poliziotto sta scrivendo un libro sulla morte del cantante che crede che sia stato ucciso e che indirizza Briscoe e Green sulle tracce di un possibile indiziato: un ex componente del gruppo ingiustamente messo da parte quando il leader della band lo aveva sostituito con la vittima. Però la collaborazione dello scrittore si rivela controproducente quando entra illegalmente nella casa del sospettato per vedere se c'era l'arma del delitto usata per uccidere la cantante: l'avvocato del sospettato infatti accusa la polizia di essersi servita dell'ex collega per procurarsi le prove violando le regole.
