Der Lebensmittelkontrolleur Larry Chapel liegt tot im Fahrstuhl eines heruntergekommenen Wohnblocks. Goren und Eames finden heraus, dass sowohl Larry als auch sein Bruder Ewan seit ihrer Studentenzeit heroinabhängig waren. Bei ihren Ermittlungen stoßen Goren und Eames auf ihre alte Bekannte Nicole Wallace, eine eiskalte junge Frau, die bereits mehrere Morde, unter anderem den an ihrer kleinen Tochter, auf dem Gewissen hat. Sie ist mittlerweile verlobt mit Ewan, der als Gerichtsmediziner arbeitet.
Weitere Nachforschungen bringen zutage, dass Ewans Frau ein Jahr zuvor bei einem mysteriösen Unfall ums Leben gekommen war und ihre zehnjährige Tochter von einer Versicherung eine Summe von fünf Millionen Dollar als Wiedergutmachung erhalten hatte. Hat Larry Nicoles Plan durchkreuzt, sich das Vermögen des Kindes unter den Nagel zu reißen? Oder stimmt Nicoles Aussage, dass Ewan nicht nur seine Frau und seinen Bruder getötet hat, sondern auch seine Tochter ermorden wollte?
When city health inspector Larry Chapel is found dead in an elevator, a quick look into Chapel's home life introduces them to Chapel's recently widowed brother, Evan, and little girl Gwen. Goren isn't very surprised to learn that Nicole Wallace is Evan's fiancée and the future mother to his little girl, but Major Case soon realizes they're off the mark in who they believe the suspect is, and Goren's only hope is to get Nicole to help him trap the killer. Logan joins the Major Case squad, but isn't pleased with being relegated to the background while the other detectives solve the cases, and Deakins tries to find a partner for him.

Parlando con il fratello Evan e con sua figlia Gwen i detective rimangono colpiti dal fatto che dopo la morte della madre la bambina legga libri incentrati sull'elaborazione del lutto. Risalendo alla bibliotecaria che glieli ha suggeriti, Goren e Eames si ritrovano davanti Nicole Wallace. Intanto il capitano Deakins ha ottenuto il trasferimento alla Squadra Speciale del detective Mike Logan.
