En septembre 1918, alors que le premier conflit mondial fait toujours rage, l’industriel toulousain Pierre-Georges Latécoère songe déjà à l’aviation d’après-guerre. Il imagine de relier la France à l’Amérique du Sud par un service régulier d’avions transportant du courrier grâce aux surplus d’appareils militaires désormais devenus inutiles. Il soumet son projet aux autorités qui l’accueillent avec beaucoup de scepticisme.
