Despite everyone's protests, Joan allows her snobby, Ivy League-educated guidance counselor to advise her against applying to college. However, after Joan relays her plans to Roger, an engaging college student on the campus she's visiting, he tells her that college is attainable and persuades her to hire him as a tutor. Meanwhile, Adam becomes jealous of Joan's rapport with Roger; Will sees a dark side of Lucy; Helen questions her commitment to Catholicism, and Beth finds it difficult to resume a relationship with the wheelchair-bound Kevin.

Joan et Adam partent visiter une université. Sur place, Joan fait la connaissance de Roger, un étudiant de 29 ans qui lui propose de l'aider à s'intégrer. Adam est très vite jaloux de leur amitié naissante. De son côté, Will suspecte Lucy d'être impliquée dans le meurtre du tueur de Judith.

Dopo il liceo, Joan è decisa a seguire un corso di design. Ma Dio le consiglia di accettare i consigli di Roger, un tutor scolastico. Adam diviene ben presto geloso del rapporto fra Joan ed il giovane. Helen comincia a dubitare del suo rinnovato interesse per la religione. Beth non vuole riprendere la sua relazione con Kevin. Uno stupido gioco fra Joan e Luke diventa un problema di alta matematica.
