Japan is hit by several typhoons a year in addition to its already abundant rainfall. Needless to say, the threat of landslides is taken very seriously. Until now, the primary method of extreme erosion prevention was to cover the slope with concrete, which is effective, but obviously not great for the environment, and certainly a blight on the landscape.
