Retired opera star Dame Hilda Bracket and her accompanist Dr Evadne Hinge have some money problems. Luckily, one of them has secretly been filling in the pools every week.
When Dame Hilda gets invited to hand out prizes at a girls school, the two ladies decide to buy new hats. This way they can try out Evadne's new cash card as well.
If Evadne agrees to act as an umpire for Dame Hilda's bowls competition, Dame Hilda will accept visitors from Stackton Tressel's twin town Bologna.
Mysterious sounds at night turn the ladies into detectives.
Just when she's preparing her campaign for local office, Dr Evadne Hinge falls victim to suspected mumps. Dame Hilda finds a solution to the problems of seeing a doctor and of canvassing without actually getting near other people.
The ladies celebrate Evadne's birthday. They then help out the vicar to convince the church commissioner to give a grant for the repairs of the church tower.
Faced with a midlife crisis the ladies take up new hobbies.
The ladies prepare for a performance of the Contemporary New Dance Company, Stackton Tressell's contribution to the Arts Festival
After Evadne's stay at the local hospital, the ladies decide to revive the hospital radio station.
The two ladies get invitations to separate events. For once, they will each have to manage on their own.
The ladies suspect their vicar is having an affair.
During a mystery weekend Dame Hilda meets her old understudy again.
Evadne offers her services as Akela to the local Girl Guides, with which Dame Hilda is involved, but it's fair to say she is less than convinced of the Doctor's abilities. Dame Hilda sets Evadne an orienteering challenge to test her mettle.
Hilda invites Evadne's ageing Auntie Morag to stay, much to the Doctor's annoyance. Dame Hilda is set on winning favour of the wealthy - but mean-spirited - old woman, and securing a large inheritance.
Whilst Dame Bracket prepares to put on her summer production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, she also dabbles in a spot of hypnotism to rid Doctor Hinge of her vile smoking habit.
When the ladies discover that they cannot nearly afford the Singapore holiday Hilda dreams of, Evadne suggests caravanning and arranges a traditional Romany wagon.
The dame and the doctor step into the breach to help with preparations when local football team Stackton Ditherers are set to play at home against Macclesfield United.
Hinge and Bracket prepare for the unveiling of a statue dedicated to assumed-local hero and native Briton, Boudica. Meanwhile, Dame Hilda has a new column in the local paper.
There are friends, and then there are friends. When Dame Hilda's old theatrical chums, Dodie and Courtney, announce that they will house-hunt in Stackton, the ladies are determined to find them all the wrong properties!
Whilst Dame Hilda has a spot of back trouble, Doctor Hinge, as the mayor, launches a 'keep Stackton tidy' anti-littering campaign in advance of the village parade.
